Pediatricians dealing with ADHD?

Are there any St. Mary's pediatricians who will prescribe meds for ADHD? I see Dr. Miller, who will not. The child psychiatrists in the area have been--let's just say NOT SO GREAT.

I hear maybe Sheth or Dillon. Cannot find Dillon in my phonebook though-is he still around?

Thanks!

Maybe the reason that your childs dr. won't prescribe mind numbing meds to your child is because he/she doesn't think your child has ADHD

Is there a reason that you are trying to medicate your child?

Have you tried all of the alternatives to medication, such as changing his/her diet?

Maybe cuz the child won't sit in front of the tv for 12 plus hours a day?

 Unbelievable, this is the problem with kids today! We sit here and wonder why society is filled with a bunch of worthless lazy people. Lets medicate our kids because they are full of energy and want to do more with their lives than just being couch potatoes. Take your kids outside and play with them, do activities with them that stimulate their minds. Morons today just want to drug their children so that being a parent will be so much easier.

Well since the can of worms was already opened I'll throw my opinion in. I think parents trying to medicate a child for ADHD is lazy. There is a reason your Dr. won't give it to you. Seeking out one who will sounds to me like a desperate attempt for a quick solution rather than doing your research and find an alternative solution.

Drifting from your question.......I know someone who has her 4 year old son on Ritalin b.c "he won't sleep 12 hours a night without it". No joke, those are her exact words. The boy clearly has a learning disabilty. He barely talks, I'm not making that up, he really doesn't talk and when he does it's toddler baby talk. She hounded her Dr repeatedly until he finally gave in and prescribed ritalin. Once she put him on it yeah he slept 12 hours a night, but he also walked around like he was in a trance and had night tremors and loss of appetite (the child is 4 and only weighs about 30 pounds), so she took him off it. He was off the meds for 4 weeks when she started complaining that he was "out of control" and again not sleeping the 12 hours. He's a boy! Boys are supposed to want to run around and play, he certainly isn't out of control, and heaven forbid he not go to bed at 7pm and sleep until it's convenient for you to get up!! I'd really like to turn her Dr in!!

You may want to try Center for Children,...they are very helpful there. Make sure that he or she is treated for the right type of ADHD...there are two known forms of it....one is the bouncy type and then the other is Inattentive type.

How about making sure the child HAS ADHD before looking to drug them up. Just a thought.

I wish people would stop treating ADD/ADHD as some sort of disease that needs fixing. When you drug these kids you are inhibiting who they are and what they have to contribute. Has anyone ever considered that these kids have a lot going on in their heads that is beneficial? Sure they can be exhausting. But if you bother to really pay attention to them, rather than being distracted by their constant energy, you might learn that they tend to be incredibly intelligent. They have a million things going on in their heads all at once, they're constantly thinking. Why inhibit that?

I will say this as calmly as possible:

YOU SHOULD NOT BE ASKING A PRIMARY CARE DOC FOR PSYCH MEDS AND THAT GOES DOUBLE FOR CHILDREN.

If you think your child has a problem and local psychs are no help haul him up to Children's and let the experts evaluate him. Do you know the primary meds to treat ADHD are AMPHETAMINES? You do not play around with this stuff. A child's brain is developing and unecessary meds can do alot of irreversible damage. I know someone who became suicidal while on Ritalin as a child. I'm not saying your child doesn't have it, but until you get a firm diagnosis from a PEDIATRIC PSYCHIATRIST don't even think of medicating.

My girlfriend has two young sons. One son was diagnosed with ADHD. Rather than put him on medications, she switched him to a gluten-free diet.

It's been about a month and the boy is doing terrific!

That's right. One should have their child extensively tested before accepting ADD/ADHD as a diagnosis. There is a Dr. James Lewis who works out of the St. Mary's court house. He is used by many and is considered an expert on Learning Disabilities and such. He is also very nice to work with and will only prescribe if he believes if it is truly in the child's best interest.
