Jack It is sad that your ex can't even go out and feed the dogs instead she lets them starve to death. If it was me I would have called the aspca or something like that lastnight and I would have taken the dog then and there since it was so skinny to give it warmth as it was cold lastnight.

I just feel for the dog its not its fault that nobody cares about it over there the lady who owned it should have found someone responsible enough to take care of it while she was gone on her trip if you get what I mean.

Well she's pretty darned hungry, so I imagine your cat looks like dinner!

Just bring the dog down here. I've got Steve on record saying I can have it, so hurry up before he changes his mind.

What a little cutie. I wouldn't worry about trying to get the weight on fast. With a quality dog kibble & regular feedings s/he? should start to gain weight in no time. Another thing to consider is taking it to the vet for shots and a check-up. Do you know if it's had any vaccinations?

OMG what a sweet looking dog. I agree with Sharon, any quality dog food will help her right now. I would be also giving her a few eggs a day on her food. Just don't over do it. If she is used to not eating alot she will be prone to stomach upset. Once you get her trusting you she will end up being the best dog ever. She will learn to accept the cat once she realizes that the cat is there to stay. Just sternly tell her no when she try's to chase it, our dogs chase our cat but it is to play only. She does need to go to the vet, if they couldn't feed her, I am sure she hasn't been vaccinated or dewormed. By deworming that will also help to put on the weight. It looks like she hasn't eaten in a long time. Your job right now is to feed her and show her that all humans are not that cruel or outright dumb. God that pisses me off! Poor little thing. I tip my hat to you for helping her out of that situation. :huggy:

Hello6

Princess of Mean
Small but frequent meals of a high quality dog food(moist mixed with dry: Nutro, Purina One, something easy to digest), if you can't afford that, Beneful has done wonders in making my dachshund Otto sumo sized.
Be sure to get the test done for heartworms too.
In regards to the cat, try the squirt gun on the dog when she shows inappropriate attention to it. Keep her on a 6 ft leash to control any lunging she may try. An animal behaviourist told me that when dogs experience hearing loss, they become sight oriented and fast moving kitties really overstimulate them.

Keep us posted! Welcome to the world of rescue.

When we found Kayla the Vet told us to add a 1/2 cup of rice to her food.

But wait, there's more...
Jack, I give you kudos for taking the dog. Lots of people would have just turned their backs and said "It's not my problem." Good on ya! :huggy: And good luck with nursing her back to health.

The dog is happy thats what it means when she gets her tail up in the air I would recommend you start giving her a chicken and rice blend dogfood made by purina one or iams or just a good brand of dogfood and if she can't eat it because its too hard for her to chew I would sprinkle some warm water on it and not wetfood that stuff just helps them get tarter buildup and gives them massive runs and unpleasant smellin farts . I would follow the recommendations for the smallest size dog they have on the bag and feed her 2 times a day that recommended portion and when shes gotten most of her weight back then start just feeding her 1 meal a day at the recommended portion for her weight or continue two meals a day and do half the portion in the am and the other half in the pm feed her at the same time each day so you can hopefully get her on a potty schedule so she doesn't continue to mess in the crate (that is going to take some effort on your part though since I bet shes never seen the inside of the house her whole entire doggy life so far). I wish you luck with her she looks like a pretty dog do you know what breed she is?

P.s I would also recommend taking him/her to the vet to make sure the dog isnt dehydrated or have rabies or any of that who knows if the person ever took care of making sure the dog was up to date on shots or any of that. Glad you have her and she now seems happy that you took her in and are feeding her and giving her some tlc.

Several small meals of a high quality dry dog food. Mix with it some kind of high protien food such as whole milk cottage cheese, plain yogurt (not fatfree), or chicken (baked or steamed).
