Perhaps a bit of a concern

Back in the early 70s, the state pushed us to switch to "no till" for all of our corn. For the soil erosion benefits they said. They sweetened the pot by making processed human waste - "sludge" - available for free from the large facilities like those operated by Washington MetCom. They provided low-cost loans so we could buy the expensive waste-handling machines - massive flotation-tired Terragators. They provided guidance on the new array of weed-killing chemicals we needed to use to prepare fields for no-till planting. This included mixing said chemicals - Paraquat CL chief among them - with liquid high-nitrogen fertilizer which we had to lay down on every no-till field in massive quantities. We bought a tanker to haul the nitrogen just so we could afford it...I used to mix and then spray the 2000-gallon loads of those chemicals wearing a ball cap and a pair of jeans. On an open tractor usually. With the wind blowing.

And 50 years later they were screaming about the damage that agricultural runoff did to the bay. and Paraquat...and...

The state "experts" can go fawk themselves.
ahhh so that explains why you are the way you are :poorbaby: but we accept you anyway :huggy: because you're special.

Then there is the old Southern Maryland Wood Treatment Plant site in Hollywood along MD Rte 235 that is
now residential area. This site was of great concern and the State knew of many carcinogens such as PCBs
that had leached into soils and ground water that most people back then drank from via wells to that water
table. That little bit of local history is well concealed and back in the day even the locals knew about it and
didn't talk about it.

Since when? Last time I went by it's still a vacant lot.

Drove by a few minutes ago. It's still empty and up for sale and has been for years.

Also got a view of the homeless tents and trash in the woods on the north end of Mervell Dean Road. Not visible from 235.

Going off on a tangent: I just got this week's newspaper from where I grew up in Pennsylvania. One of the Council members asked about the homeless situation and the Police Chief said that they pick them up, feed them a meal and put them on a bus out of town.

No idea what, if anything, is being done about this.

I knew about that one too. I was surprised to hear we have one here in Hollywood. A co-worker lives around the corner from me and he told me about it last week.

Re-read my text which I got from the second link (forgot to post that one but it's up there now.)
That article says that the land is cleared for residential use. I can only quote the research material.
(Refer to the section: "What is the Site Status?", second sentence.)

Lived in St. Mary's for 15 years when all of that was still around. Worked at all of those military
installations and can attest first hand of the hazards. Same for the wood treatment plant, it was
there when I was there. Was a mess. PAXRIV closed and removed tow housing areas due to haz
mat. Then moved to Calvert. NRL is worse because they were very lax about their pollution.

Now the cat is out of the bag.

I've lived in Hollywood for 30 years. That property has been up for sale for a long time. I don't think anyone is chomping at the bit due to its toxic history.

You might want to look into the history of SOMD.

There are several cancer causing areas of concern that have impacted the water and soil of SOMD.
Naval Air Test Center Patuxent River MD is one of the largest. It is the area of SEVERAL Super Fund Sites
that both State and Federal agencies have expressed concern and done investigation, testing and cleanup.
There are reported from the State and Federal agencies that give detailed data on this. The USN disposed
of many different carcinogens over the decades and even back then knew that they were poisonous, yet
did so anyway and not held accountable. Many people working there have died of various cancers.

civilianexposure.org/patuxent-river-naval-air-station-maryland/
civilianexposure.org/pfas-contamination-at-the-patuxent-river-naval-air-station-what-we-dont-know-may-hurt-us/

And then there is the Naval Research Laboratory Chesapeake Beach MD in Calvert County. They have
let many different chemicals and carcinogens go into the water, the bay and the soil there. They do and
have done lots of chemical testing, firefighting, explosive testing and other classified things there for
decades and have not been held accountable to anyone.

militarypoisons.org/latest-news/naval-research-lab-in-chesapeake-beach-md-sends-high-levels-of-pfas-into-the-chesapeake-bay
bayjournal.com/news/fisheries/forever-chemicals-from-navy-lab-flowing-into-chesapeake-bay/article_2bb30198-041d-11ec-8d03-7fbdc38a88a7.html

cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/SiteProfiles/index.cfm?fuseaction=second.Cleanup&id=0300305#bkground

And now they are finding that carcinogens in fish in Maryland waters are high. Especially industrial and forever
chemicals. And this also applies to shellfish as well as finfish. The chemicals come from farming, industry and
the military among other sources such as illegal use and disposal by homeowners and landscapers.

washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2006/01/25/catfish-in-md-river-have-high-cancer-rates/ff8ac506-8018-4e3a-b977-b6832b91ab39/

There has also been problems in the past with arsenic and other carcinogens in several SOMD water supplies
that serve large populations.

epicwaterfilters.com/blogs/news/waldorf-maryland-water-quality-report

Granted, the last link is from a water filter vendor, but the data contained is from official sources. So there is that.

Be informed, make your choice, investigate.

You might want to consider installing a treatment system on your home.
And it will only get worse.

EXACTLY! Those carcinogens are also "forever chemicals". They found
several varieties of dioxins along with arsenic, heavy metals and petroleum
waste. And you can not guarantee that everything gets cleaned up. The
mess had been there way too long for there to be just "surface" pollution.

And by their own admission, the State EPA and Federal EPA didn't (and still
doesn't) know what the long term effects would be or what the safe limits
of exposure would be.

Same with the decades and decades of dumping and leaching on the navy
bases. It has all perced WAY down into the water and ground.

Also a good chance of the higher-than-normal arsenic in the water around
Lusby and Solomons was from the old USN bases that operated (and still
operate) near there. Both from WW2 where there was a large fuel farm back
where the yacht basin (old WW2 amphibious training base) is now and the
still-operating navy rec center and NATC support activities across MD Rte 2/4
at the foot of the bridge. There was also a lot of hazmats over there. I also
remember when that was more operational than now and did not have a rec
center there. But did support some fleet activity and had fuel and munitions
and solvents over there.

Wonder if there was any environmental investigation of that area? There were
several large fires over at that installation when it was slowing down operationally.

And some involved burning hazmats. So there is even more stuff that leached into
the ground and water tables from the fires and firefighting.

I fear the Bay will only get worse. Regardless of the agreement years ago between the States. I haven't heard Hoyer come to the forefront on this issue. In fact, I haven't heard him at all. Is he still around?
Just offer some free food and Hoyer magically shows up.

He's keeping his head down now that he is part of the Biden Team.
