I bought a guinea pig from them last year and he was sick. Thank goodness I caught it before he got really sick. They took him to their vet and then sent him back home with me and medicines. He is now fat and happy and spoiled rotten. I recently purchased two rats from there as pets, they have snotty noses, been treating them for that, they are coming around too. I definitely would not buy from them again. Seems like I attract sick animals. My vet credit card is getting FULL :jameo:

I bought 3 fish there. And when i got home i put them in the fish tank, fed them. And went to bed. And when i got up the next morning to check on them. The fish were dead at the top.

And their warranty/guarentee is horrible. You tell them it died, and they are just like o'well or what did you do to it? O and then they want you to bring the dead animal back. What like I am makin up the 4 cryin kids trailing behind me. Now I have to make them ride all the way back to the store with the dead animal. And all for what, so they can open the box look at it, ask me what I did to it, and then throw it in the trash :banghead:

The most I go in there for is food for the animals. Its always so busy I try to stay away on the weekends. I feel bad for their birds too they look so sickly. I wish I could rescue them all but one big bird is enough for my house.
Food is way overpriced there as well as everything else. I've noticed price differences of dollars between Petco and Petsmart. I always make the trek to Waldorf whenever I need to restock on my pet supplies.

Glad to know about the animals though, eventually my daughter will be wanting a small furry creature. I'll be sure to steer clear of them.

The obvious lesson learned here is never purchase a Pet from a "Major Pet Outlet Store". The main reason for this is their suppliers typically deal is mass and not quality. This is especially true with Cats and Dogs who are supplied from what can be best described as Mills and so happens their general health is almost always in jeopardy and most important uncontrolled breeding within breeds often leads to a genetic makeup that can result in large Vet bills later in life. You may pay a little more but believe me your best insurance is too seek the private breeder (with referances) or the local Mom and Pop store where the stock is more hands on from the owner.

I like Corner Critters alot, but sometimes their rodents are jam packed in tanks. I know that they are feeders, and people don't really care about them, but they could at least give them a little more room. Most of the time they're ok though. I've bought many rodents from them over the years.

One time when I was looking around at their reptiles, I leaned over to look through the side of one of their big tanks, and felt something touch my hair...so I pulled back. I had leaned against one of those sticky fly tapes.... :dork:
:lmao:
I hate corner critters. I think the place is filthy and getting help was hard each and every time I walked in.
I buy fish at PetCo and they are still doing great. Just my opinion.

Just thought I would update. Well the Tort I paid a 100 bucks for a Petco died last night. What fun right. Now I had to get up at 5 am this morning to bury it before the kids see it. Now the even better part. I get to explain to a 2 and 4 yr old what happened to the turtle they had gotten sooooo attached to. Gee Lucky me...................

You should go buy a friend for the dead turtle at the good pet store, tell the guy quietly to put two in the box and when you get home, Surprise, the turtle you had before is still alive and now he has a friend. :huggy:

NOT Politically Correct!!
The pet shop in downtown Leonardtown across the street from Bell Motors Cheverlot dealership has a lot of exotic pets and they know what the're doing... :coffee:

I adopted a beautiful English Lop Ear rabbit from Petco who is very healthy. Then again, I adopted him the same day they brought him in... :jameo:

As for Petco, I only go in there when I can't find what I want elsewhere or I don't want to trek to L-town. Basically: training leashes, frozen rats, flea products that actually work, etc.

As for their employees, 1 chick owns boa constrictors and gave me some pretty good advice for my ball python. Other than that, they're employees are useless- unless you need them to get mice from the box, and then they regard you as Satan.

I am new here, but I was going to go to Petco in Prince Frederick this weekend to buy a parakeet, guess I won't be doing that. Can anyone suggest somewhere to buy one in Calvert County? I know Dunkirk had a pet shop, is it still open and are they okay to buy pets from?

I went in there yesterday to buy some green anoles. It took me 20 minutes to find somebody to help me then the guy goes I have never gotten these out before. Side note they are pretty fast and they jump. He asked if he should he should know anything before sticking his hand in there and I told him not to grab their tales which I thought is just a general rule for reptiles. Took the guy another 10 minutes to catch them. It was a pretty funny show for me.

Bay-Kat,

I would ask people who know, work with ect. But as we are learning here is a general good rule NOT to buy from Large chain stores. I notice there are quite a few parakeets listed in the pets section of somd. Maybe that would be a good place to start.

Star..

Next time get video and share the laughs. I can use a good one..lol

On a side note, is there any way to try to rescue a fish that is in distress? We bought several fish from Petco last weekend, and all but one seems to be making a good transition to our tank. I noticed when feeding the fish this morning, that one is having a hard time swimming. It wasn't dead yet, but I'd guess that it will be gone by the time that I get home this evening. It didn't appear to have any abrasions on it's body, or have any thing wrong with it's fins....it just wasn't moving in a nice and fluid manner. It looked like it was only moving on one side...sort of listing to the right....and in a downward motion.

Is there fish triage or anything that I can do to save this fish if it is still alive when I get home? I am not positive, but I think it is a Cyclid, about 4 inches long, and bright beautiful orange.

Figures that this would happen when Bob the Fish Guy is out of town. :ohwell:

Get him out of the tank and put him in quarantine asap. Use some of water from the tank to put him in a smaller tank. I don't know what you can do to save him, though.
