Playing with HDR

One from yesterday. HDR is a weird way to get an image, there is a differant workflow for every image and its often hard to tell if a subject will work out in HDR.

HDR tips~ Use photomatix , Work in .Tiff or the noise will kill the image. Reduce saturation , Watch out for the haloes , Remember to bail out early if results look poor in photomatix as most subjects suck in HDR.

That is fantastic Deadeye! I am so envious of you guys, but I guess I am just a babe in the woods. Some day.....

Psuedo-hdr of an old barn on Rt4, single image converted and tonemapped in Photomatix. Seems that the older version (v. 2.5) cannot open the 14bit RAW files, thus i had to install v. 3.0 to be able to open them. The interface is actually a little nicer too!

That is wicked cool! I love that ominous looking cloud over the barn!

Was this during the Blessing of the Fleet or the Lighthouse challenge? This is a great shot even if it wasn't run through HDR but I am biased since the island is in my front yard.

Is there HDR freeware out there? OR Where can I get more info without bugging you and Mr. X too much?:I'll buy a round if you guys get together for a forum photog session.

KOM526, That shot is HDR. It was taken during the Lighthouse Challenge weekend. I had wanted to go out to the island for about two years, and since Blackistone got finished this year, I had to go out this summer. It is a great place. I think I will try to get back out there this coming spring and stay for an afternoon. I didn't really explore the photo ops all around the island.

I tried it not sure what I need to do

Here is a tree just messing with a free Linux HDR program called Qtpfsgui. Can't beat the price since it is free. I just set my camera to do +- 1 for white balance, and let the program do this with it. I should try to get out tomorrow and see what else I can shoot.

A little over done IMO...per the halo around the edges. Good effort though, could be a pretty cool HDR with a little less processing.

I thought so too. I found its a little bit better processing with the older version of fattal and I did one other version just cant remember the name. I think I will head out today and try some shots at National Harbor if I can get the wife out of the house.

Here is the older fattal processing with some noise reduction. Still has halo effect not as bad. One other issue I found was in the other image I did not align the photos so any ghosting or focus issues we exaggerated.

This is the other version of what type I cannot remember. The colors are bit different in this one and almost no halo effect.

Ok here its a little better.

OK so I found out using jpg files was not helping things so now I am using RAW converting to tif and processing. They look better.

So HDR and jpg aren't too compatible? OR is it a software issue with the program you are using? I'm asking b/c my camera does not shoot RAW.

In some cases jpg will work. When processing jpg it has difficulty processing the dark images. During compression of the image black areas are coded as 0 and you will see black spots wtih no color at all. I will post up 2 images processed exactly the same way but one using jpg files the other using tif.
