Please help us rent a house.....

We have been stuck in an apartment complex on Chancellor’s Run Rd in California, MD since Nov 2003 all because we have a pit bull and it seems everyone thinks "pit bulls are man-eaters".

We did not get a pit bull to have a cool, powerful, and aggressive dog. Three years ago, we rescued a puppy who was going to be put down( euthanized) by her owners because no one would pay $1000.00 for her and the owner did not want her. She just happened to be a pit bull. :banghead:

Gracie is a wonderful dog. She is not food aggressive, dog aggressive, cat aggressive, or people aggressive. She doesn’t bark, howl, chew, dig in the trash, or terrorize our 9yr old, declawed, cat. They get along wonderfully. The cat has even taken over sleeping in Gracie’s kennel. We have lived in our current apartment complex for 3 years and all of the neighbors AND the neighbor’s dogs love her to death. We get compliments on her behavior and training several times a week. People have even brought their bad tempered dogs to meet Gracie in an attempt to socialize them. Gracie has been friends with labs, pugs, rottweilers, dobermans, yorkies, dalmations, other pit bulls, boxers, terriers, and many others I can’t remember. She knows how to sit, stay, heel, lay down, and say I love you. Well, sometimes she knows how to say “I love you.”

The dog and cat are spayed and neutered. The cat was stray that had been declawed. Both are well housebroken, the cat has NEVER, in 3 years, went outside the litter box, and the dog can be left alone for around 9 hrs. They both just went to the Well Pet Clinic on 9/5/06 and got all of their vaccinations and their rabies shots.

With all of that said, we are looking for a house to rent. We would love a fenced in yard, and a storage shed or garage of some kind. It needs to be within 25 mins of the Pax River Navy Base, accept smokers, and have access to high speed internet. We would like to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 to $1150 per month. We have been paying $1035 per month for a tiny 2 bedroom apartment at our current complex and the rent goes up to $1149 in January. :shocking: I know there are house rentals available for this amount. We would like to move in between November 1 and December 1. If a property is offered at less than say $1100, we would consider paying an extra $50 or so per month for the smoking and pets as well as a negotiable pet deposit. I can pay all deposits and the first month's rent immediately.

I have renter’s insurance / liability insurance with State Farm and I would put it in writing that I would assume all responsibilities for my pet. My current lease clearly states the landlord is not liable for ANY of my pets actions. I am also working on getting a letter from a dog behaviorist that states that the dog is not aggressive. Renters would be myself, 25 yr old female, and boyfriend, 29 yrs old. We both work for local contractors and have no children. We don’t party, drink, use drugs, or anything else that would annoy landlords or neighbors.

If you can, or you know of anyone that can help us find something, please contact me at redrumm@xsmail.com or PM me.

Thanks in advance.

You're probably better off finding a townhouse w/in this price range. Lots of people will rent to people with pets, you just have to do some looking. Try the somd.com classifieds, Maryland Pennysaver and Washington Post. Also ask local realty offices as they always have rentals.

I looked on the classified section of the somd.com and the only thing I found in that range were townhomes.

Drive around the San Souci neighborhood (behind Shoppers Food Warehouse) and look for realtor's signs. There are usually homes for sale and/or rent back there and should be in your price range.

Many landlords will not accept pets, regardless of type.

You should buy a house - then you can do what you want. As long as you rent, you will be subject to the rules and restrictions of the person who owns the house/apartment.

I would just leave out the breed type. Say she's a mutt. Many people can't tell by just looking and mutts come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and looks.

But, if this helps I thought I'd never find a place to rent with my two dogs. I have a German Shepherd and an English Bulldog. They're banned from any apartments I checked and the fact that they are two rather large dogs and breeds known to be aggressive and/or intimidating at the least I thought it'd never happen. But, I got a place and the landlord was just fine with the dogs. He understands pets are part of the family. So, it is possible just keep looking.

Good luck!!!

"It's a loveable dog and absolutely non-aggressive...." That's what all pit bull owners say. Right up until the day it rips the face off of some unsuspecting toddler or old lady. Why would any landlord take a risk on renting to a pit-bull owner when he could just as easily rent to someone else and forgoe the risk?

Yeah, I know we need to quit smoking, and I know we need to buy, but we just cant buy right now. I have been working with realtors, but they tell me people hear pit bull and say they dont want the liability. I don't want to lie, because if I lie, why should they trust me when I say she's not aggressive.

I know there are houses out there in that price range. If you look on Centrury 21 there are about 15 and, they come and go on this site too. I believe my only chance of getting out of this apartment is if I find someone who is a pet lover that dosen't believe in the "bad dog breeds." I'm just trying to do everything I can to find a place. We went through this last year when our lease expired and had to renew it because we couldn't find anyone that accepted pit bulls. It's soooooooooo frustrating.

I'm going to try to post a picture of my Gracie.

Maybe it's just me, but if I had to make a choice between living in a decent place and owning a pet (of any kind)...well...

I think your priorities are screwed up.

:yeahthat: One of my many duties here at work is to manage a small set of apartments. If there are breed standards in the lease and they find out that you have one of them living there, they will have just cause to throw your ass out of there! :yay:

I think your priorities are screwed up.

Well, first of all, I got the dog in Louisiana, not Maryland. So I had no idea the trouble she would be.

I hate to say this..... but I guess you think I should be responsible like the previous owner and throw the dog out or have her put down????

That seems very responsible. That's why there are rabid strays in Wildewood.

People don't make responsible choices. It's easier to throw a dog out than work through the problem. That's how I ended up with this one in the first place. Someone wanted an easy $1000.

If you don't agree with my priorities, that's fine. To each, his own.

It's not up to me to agree or disagree with your priorities. I'm just saying that, at this point, your choices are to keep the dog and live in your current apartment, or get rid of the dog and live somewhere else.

Anyway, that dog doesn't look like a pitbull to me. I'm just saying.....for what it's worth.

If you can't find a dog behaviorist to wroite the letter, have a dog obedience trainer look at her and see if he/she will do it. Get one in the same area that you are looking to rent, that way if there are any questions they can contact them.

Yes, I am definately working on that! I don't know if it will help but we'll try.

I also posted another picture on the first post.

Gracie doesn't really look like a pit bull to me either. But others see it right away.

Looks like a wonderful dog. Good luck with your search. Try looking in CRE, it is probably just on the edge of your 25 min commute requirement. You can shorten the commute time with reckless speeding you know :)
