Preschool/Kindergarten Roundup

Having worked with elementary school age at risk youth, I get where you're coming from. But.....on the other side of the pendulum, snotty little rich kids often lack discipline too. They're handed everything in life and often have no boundaries set and no responsibilities taught.

I worked for the public schools up on LI in a town that was extremely diverse. So in one school, we had mini gang bangers all on section 8, living in the ghetto. Then we had the little rich kids from the bay area who lived in multi-million dollar homes. The school had issues with both groups of kids. The most well behaved kids were those from middle class, working families.

I agree with everything you've said. My point was that pre-k here is need based so the majority of the kids have the potential to lack discipline and structure at home. When they hit kindergarten the playing field is more level because the diversity is there.

No crap right. But I'm a big bad witch because I didn't want them in a classroom full of Kaleems or Marcuses. :lmao: Being a single mother when they were both of pre-k age I qualified for pre-k and chose to pay an extra year of full-time daycare because I felt it was a better environment for my kids. :killingme

yeah yeah
Erin- she is 4. Can you believe it?! Her bday is at the end of Nov. So- she is past the cusp.

And Skeeter is in preschool now, a private preschool- but l lost my job and cannot afford to do it again (unless I get another job). So.. yeah...I was thinking that the roundup would be workable. The school she would be going to, is not to the best of my liking. But I dont know how to get around that.

Having read these posts. My only comment is - you can't go wrong with providing your child with education, whether is need based, public, private or at home. Helping your child, learn, grow and be a good person in this world is the most important thing a parent can provide to them (of course after shelter/food/clothes).

That said, I know someone who put her child is childcare without a pre-k. That child entered K this year, unable to recognized let alone spell her name. She was also unable to count very high. This child deserved better and now is the problem of the public school system.

children deserve more than that!

Soccermom- that is sad. At least she should have been taught the basic's. Luckily before Skeeter got into prek (where she is now) she knew how to do the basics; but whatever.

The issue I have is that she is the oldest in her class, and the kids in her class are JUST now getting ready to start turning 3 1/2. And that doesnt sound like much- however it is a big difference when the teacher is teaching them to count to 10 when she is already counting ahead along with writing her name and such. Don't get me wrong..I am not saying she is some baby genius... but she is older than the other children. I mean- she cannot help it- because of when her bday falls.

One of the problems I am dealing with is the teacher is saying that she is getting bored with what they are doing. She tries to work with her alone- but can only do so much in a 3 hr day/3 days a week.

Just looking for ideas.

My son was in PreK at Patuxent last year, the same school your child goes to right? First off, I'm not black, and second, we're not a low income family. My son was put in Prek due to speech delay, due to chronic ear infections which caused him to have hearing loss. I visited his class quite often, and your assumption is completely wrong. It's a shame you want to shelter your son from the big bad world of Prek!! :killingme

Wow. So someone who isn't high or middle class has -bad- children. I dont see how money makes the children bad. It is what a parent teaches or doesn't teach that makes them have problems. Excuse my errors as I'm using my phone.

Absolutely agree with you. It's all about how a child is raised, the environment they're brought up in, that determines how they will behave at that young age. They can only learn what they are exposed to by their parents/caregivers. Parents can either give their children a great foundation or they can destroy their chances for a great future.

Funny you pull the race card because I NEVER said word one about it. :killingme

Funny that I have 2 kids in school and visit both of their classes often and it solidified my choice not to put either of them in pre-k. Guess what, I'm the mom and I'm allowed to make those choices for them.

Watercolor - I wish you all the luck in the world. So you try, all they can do is say 'no.'

I decided to keep my little one in private preschool 3 days a week. Not sure I'd push her for Kindergarten the next year; I have fears of her 'socially retracting.' And also wanting to date early, drive early, etc... we've got another year.

Smart move, Erin! She will most certainly benefit throughout life from your decision!

In case you may be interested in a smaller classroom environment... We have a beautiful school located in Solomon's, MD. Our Lady Star Of The Sea School is a private Catholic school that focuses on academic excellence and strong values. Our school has a wonderful reputation, the Kindergarten class is small and there is one class per grade up to 8th grade. We do not cut back on Art , Music, Computers, Spanish or any other resources. Band is optional in Grade 4. Financial Assistance is avail, and our Open House has been rescheduled for Feb 10th 9-11AM. You can visit our website too OLSSS.org. I am the proud parent of 2 students who attend OLSS. We love it and everyone really cares about the students.
