In case you may be interested in a smaller classroom environment... We have a beautiful school located in Solomon's, MD. Our Lady Star Of The Sea School is a private Catholic school that focuses on academic excellence and strong values. Our school has a wonderful reputation, the Kindergarten class is small and there is one class per grade up to 8th grade. We do not cut back on Art , Music, Computers, Spanish or any other resources. Band is optional in Grade 4. Financial Assistance is avail, and our Open House has been rescheduled for Feb 10th 9-11AM. You can visit our website too OLSSS.org. I am the proud parent of 2 students who attend OLSS. We love it and everyone really cares about the students.

Do you have to be Catholic?

Our Lady of the Sea does not discriminate against non catholics, but you will be expected to pay a higher tuition.

Shiloh Christian Academy does a nice job - if you have a child who misses the K cut off. But I wouldn't stay there beyond 1st or 2nd grade. They don't offer much for extra services.

That was some interesting reading, I skimmed through it. It illustrates the fact that we, as parents, don't necessarily know what our children need to learn prior to entering Kindergarten. That doesn't surprise me one bit because I've actually been thinking about that a lot lately. It's certainly a lot more than I needed to learn before starting school 30 years ago (damn, I'm old!). Unfortunately, it also indicates that some of our daycares, pre-k, etc, aren't teaching them everything they need to know either.

So......is there a curriculum somewhere for ages birth-5 yrs old for all of us to follow? Ya know, so we can get on the same page and prepare our kids to be geniuses? :yahoo:

the MSDE website has the "Guidelines for Healthy Child Development and Care"

Office of Child Care

Thank you so much! I bookmarked it and will take a look at it later today. :yay:

oh, good...wasn't sure if I detected :sarcasm: or not...paranoid by the way ppl. talk to each other on these forums...
You may also be interested in researching "The Creative Curriculum" and Reggio Emelia philosophy. They are the main foundations that a majority of early childhood professionals base curricula on, in my experience. They are considered to be among "best practices" for programs...happy reading.

The best and most important things that we can do for our children are to read to them every day and to talk to them using correct grammar and rich vocabulary (this includes singing and nursery rhymes when they are very young). It is also important to encourage them to ask questions, annoying as it might be to answer why, why, why...that is how they develop an understanding of their world and their place in their world...

OLSS School /Kindergarten survey

Hello, I'm just wondering who out there has either considered our school for Kindergarten in the Fall. I also wanted to answer questions you may have about our school. 77 Years of Faith and Excellence!

My two children have attended OLSS School in Solomon's since Kindergarten. My oldest is in 5th grade but is in 6th grade Lang Arts. He also began Advanced Band a year early. Our children read well and love school. The class size is small and the teachers know their students well. Prayer is important but non Catholics are great students too. We do have children's Mass every Wed with each class and teacher. Parents are welcome! We offer tours of the school...
