Democrats have a plan...the Biden plan is one option, that will probably be the plan that we have to resort to when all is said and done.
I read the article in the NYT by Biden.(
Biden NYT Editorial. Here is an excerpt from it.
"The idea, as in Bosnia, is to maintain a united Iraq by decentralizing it, giving each ethno-religious group — Kurd, Sunni Arab and Shiite Arab — room to run its own affairs, while leaving the central government in charge of common interests."
This is an oxymoron. How do you "decentralize" a country with a centralized government? I'm anxious to see the results of this.
Another quote: "We could drive this in place with irresistible sweeteners for the Sunnis to join in"
This sounds just yummy. "Irresistible sweetners". What the heck is this?
Quote: Provide "a regional nonaggression pact."
What the heck is this? Who is going to enforce this, the central decentralized government/s?
Bosnia is Biden's continuous model for his plan. When Clinton sent our troops in he stated they would be out in a year. Our troops are still there. Is this the model Biden really wants to use?
Then this is the real kicker: "It is increasingly clear that President Bush does not have a strategy for victory in Iraq. Rather, he hopes to prevent defeat and pass the problem along to his successor."
Does he mean sort of how Clinton passed on the al Qaeda problem to Bush leaving us in this mess in the first place?
Quote: "Establish three largely autonomous regions with a viable central government in Baghdad. The Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite regions would each be responsible for their own domestic laws, administration and internal security."
Can you imagine if we did this sort of thing in this country? With the strife that exists between the white and black communities we create segregated communities controlled by a central governement? Under the Biden plan there would be rampant institutional racism and descrimination at the hands of whoever is power and has the largest population. Bottom line, it would be no different than the Saddam regime.
Quote: "Entice the Sunnis into joining the federal system with an offer they couldn't refuse."
Mmmmm, more yummy "irresistible sweetners".
Quote: "Ensure the protection of the rights of women and ethno-religious minorities".
Wow, I thought this was already happening.
Ahhh, then the article finally gets to the meat of the matter. Timeline for withdrawl. By 2008. Hmmm, did you watch the Steete/Cardin interview on Meet the Press this past weekend? So we have two dems on board.
The last thing you have ask about this "Biden" plan is why aren't democrats all over this and proposing a bill for these changes?
Keep in mind. Iraq is Dubya's mess. Republicans should stop asking what Dems want to do about it...and ask the man responsible what he intends to do about it
I do ask what Bush is going to do about this. Outside of this Biden plan, all I'm seeing from the left is "It's Bush's fault".
