Prices are going to SKYROCKET on lithium battery powered equipment!

Found the leftist.
You're an idiot. Why assume I am a leftist because I know about battery chemistry? I have said time and again I don't give a crap about the environment and when I get my electric vehicle (which I will) it will be to save money, to have left maintenance, and to never have to go to a gas station again.

This is not a left / right issue, not unless you assume (as you just did) that anything regarding technological progress or even just the knowledge of how things work is the purview of leftists. I guess that would make you a Luddite, go back to whittling spoons or whatever it is you kids do for fun.

Just a little story about this family in Abell.
The man says his house was set on fire by his cell phone while it was charging.
Well now he has no house.

One day one of these EV's is going to be parked in the garage of a row house and burn down the whole block of them. My advice if you have an electric car leave it outside.

Because no house ever burnt down from fuel stored in the garage.....

There are people in this world who do foolish things. LIKE storing fuel or even propane tanks in their garage. Of buying an electric car. I cannot make their decision for them I can only suggest that they don't do such things. You won't see fuel or a lithium batterie car in my garage.

There was a guy in my neighborhood a few years back that would reload ammo in his detached garage. Had a huge amount of supplies. And several neighborhood kids liked to play with roman candles. They managed to save the house, but his garage burnt faster than you would believe.

Because lithium’s concentration in ore at Thacker Pass runs as low as two-tenths of one percent, producing one ton of the stuff for use by society entails strip mining and processing as much as 500 tons of earth. Over a single year, producing 60,000 tons of lithium at the site could mean digging up as much as 20 to 30 million tons of earth, more than the annual amount of earth dug up to produce all coal output of all but seven or eight U.S. states.

And a few tribes have already stated that's sacred ground to them, site of some ancient massacre. Almost seems like its a convenient excuse anymore. "Well, that land over there, yeah, its sacred". "Oh, and the other piece also.. "

Average EV uses between 10 and 20 pounds of lithium. One ton is good for 100 to 200 EVs.

A Tesla uses about 10 pounds, and produced nearly 1.37 million vehicles in 2022. Adds up fast.

So we can expect you to post every time a battery catch fire? Maybe we should set up a special forum?
I didn't post this thread I merely commented.
I thought that was what the forum was for.
Does it upset you to read or view the comments of others?
I find it interesting that the lithium batteries have a proclivity for combustion.
Hopefully if there is enough interest in it the manufacturers will find a way to fix it.
I believe I will continue with my comments and if you feel we need a new "special forum" maybe you could set one up. I would be happy to comment on it.

But Lithium mining is so good for the environment.

For your consideration ...

Economically, money wise, it will all come out a wash. Insurance for EV's is going up fast.

Maybe you could express your due diligence and show us vis a vis a comparable ICE car to the EV you are going to get? Initial retail cost, insurance costs, total cost of ownership over a 5 year period, miles for miles cost calculations, estimated retained value of the vehicles after those 5 years, etc.. And don't forget to factor in future inflation increases into those calculations. You should use about an 8% to 12% per annum increase in costs to account for inflation. You just might convert some of the naysayers.

Oh. And SMECO is raising their rates again, so, it's gonna cost more to charge that thing. Unless of course you are spending $20-30 thousand to have solar installed on your house, which, still, is zero sum.

I'm not sure what you are trying to get across. Electronics and anything "powered" has always been a source of fires. This goes double when they are made as cheaply as possible in china. Lead acid battery powered devices catch fire, mains powered devices catch fire (I seem to recall toasters being a big contributor to house fires).

Lightning caused 22,600 structure fires last year. Do you have lightning rods on your house? Google says 1 in 10 million lithium batteries fail in such a way as to cause a fire. It's so rare in fact that every time it happens you hear about it on the news.

But go ahead, live your life in fear. Did you get all 13 covid shots too?

Are they doing it in my backyard? Then I don't care. Go tell Greta.

Its fixed. If you buy quality stuff and don't abuse it. I'm not upset, but I don't see the relevance to the price of lithium to you post. I suspect this investigation will show that the battery was damaged due to rough handling. Firefighters not being the most gentle of creatures. Theres god knows how many lithium powered hand tools in use, and very few burn down anything.
