Puppy

then please get a puppy that is more sturdy.... small kids and fragile dogs never mix... UNLESS you have a deep pocket and can cover broken legs.

Go with a small beagle..... :yay: social dog, fun dog.... good with kids and wont break if dropped :killingme

Those are not good choices for a household with a toddler. First, those dogs are pretty delicate and can be easily injured, secondly, they are not known to be tolerant of children and are likely to bite. I would rethink those breeds. Perhaps a nice small beagle mix, or cocker would still be small and cute but more tolerant of childrena nd hardier. It is pretty important to research breeds before commiting to them, you can save yourself a lot of trouble and heartache.

My brother and SIL have a chihuahua, they had her before having children, and she's great with the kids. I mean, she's not much of a playful snuggly type but she doesn't snap at them or anything. Still, I imagine with a 4 year old you'd want a dog that the child can play with. My coworker had a chihuahua too which she got after having children and her daughter, I think she was 4 or 5, thought the dog might be able to fly off the deck......it was so sad. Of course the poor pup didn't make it :frown:

This doesn't sound like someone who needs a dog of any kind unless it's stuffed !

A child at 4 years old should be taught to be nice to an animal, and should know better. Teach the kid kindness first before getting any sized dog!

Children are sometimes rough with animals, even when they know they shouldn't be. By 'rough' I mean 'playful', you know...they just want to wrestle and play and cuddle and sometimes it's a little rougher than we (adults) would be. That doesn't mean 'don't get a dog', though I do think the OP would be better suited for a medium sized dog :yay:

Im not saying my daughter thinks dogs can fly. But if she is running around and the pup is chasing her ... I think of worst case scenario. I like how most of you automatically think i shouldnt get one. So if you are having negative inputs dont bother. If i have to pay for any vet visits i will

Why not a lab? They are GREAT with kids....While they are a little larger they are going to be able to play with her, and not worry if she might get rough. Yet be gentle enough not to take her down if they are running around like chickens with their heads cut off

My coworkers daughter did :ohwell:

Even though my brother and SIL have a chihuahua who's as cute as a button and doesn't snap, etc, I would still recommend a slightly larger breed...mostly because the pup would be able to keep up with your daughter and be as playful as she would want/hope for. That's just from personal experience.

I have a Jack Russell-Beagle mix who is absolutely amazing! My nephew just loves her to pieces and she's great with my 16 month old. Plus, she's 'small'...that might be a breed to consider

What about a Golden? They are such great family dogs and very durable.

Why not adopt or rescue?

I always get my animals as strays on the side of the highway (I had six dogs at one point with 12 puppies to boot..) That was when my Mom said enough was enough.... So I wasn't allowed to bring anymore home and was tasked with finding homes for all the pups, which I did... One of the best dogs I ever had, we found at the local landfill..

Recently, I started looking for a puppy, I thought about going to the shelters but changed my mind because of the "adoption" fees they have now. By the time you pay the adoption fees, you can usually find something you really like for about the same amount.. The only thing I had to do was be patient and stay away from the shelters because one look and I'm taking someone or someone's home with me!

Patience paid off with my new puppy and a new learning experience!

I found out that "Free" pets are often snatched up by the labs for experimental purposes... Something I had no knowledge of... It made sense so I'm sure this was one reason the "adoption" fees came about and then of course to cover the costs of vaccines, spay and neutering...

I thought I would share this with those that aren't aware of the Labs snatching up the "free"... Hopefully this information can help provide another "free" pet with a real home!

Any local breeders out here? I just want a small to medium sized dog

Why the heck do want a Breeders (puppy mill) dog when there are SO many on the shelter to adopt!!!

Go adopt a real dog!!!! Not some crazy in-breed money only dog.
