depends on your definition of "protective"

My wife's Yorkie pees on her anytime a couple of dogs come around....he makes damn sure everyone knows that's his mommy....:killingme

Im gonna say its how the dog is socialized... not so much on breed. I have seen chow that have been more willing to greet than some others and I would trust over some labs or goldens.

Its how you start to socialize them at the early age... make things as positive and give them all the experiences you can. Giving them the opportunity to meet and greet with as many people will make a social dog.. keeping them secluded will make them a shy and skittish dog and more prone to bite a stranger due to fear.

also breeding will have lots to do with it... if you breed bad disposition dogs.. you will produce that in the pups... Well breed dogs with strong background will produce offspring like so.

You will have some breeds that are more "strong willed" or "out going" than others just do to their personalities…. But its only what you put into your dog is what you will get out of him.

He was asking our opinion about which breeds tend to be wary of strangers. Yes, you can socialize dogs so they're friendly, but there are definitely breeds of dogs out there that "tend" to be less friendly to strangers.

I have seen LOTS of labs, many Aussies, Irish Wolf Hounds are VERY wary of strangers, Briards, chihuahua's, Cocker Spainiels, min pin, American Eskimo, GSD's ..... just to start a list

I agree with the Aussies (and chows, CB Retrievers, etc from prevois posts). I have a 4 y/o Aussie that Ive had since he was 6 weeks. He is VERY protective of me, "his" family and "his" house. But I can take him to the boardwalk, fair, etc. and he dosnt give strangers (human or canine) a 2nd thought. But for people to approach the house, my family or especially me, he goes berzerk - barks and charges unless called back. Hes very obedient and never bitten anyone, but definitely had a few warning-nips for people who just walk in unnaounced (i.e. we dont greet them at the door, etc).
