Question about older dogs

and if you cant afford to care for a pet the right way for its whole life.. then maybe some should not own one... (and that is a general statement not directed towards a single person...)

If only people who could afford to pay for extensive geriatric care to keep an animal alive past its expiration date could own pets, there are about five people in SoMD who would have them. It's absurd to say that only people who can afford to shell out $5-10,000 per year for a pet should get one.

so if your dog was diabetic... you would just put it to sleep?

If I couldn't afford the constant vet visits and the medication, yes. Absolutely. Especially if I had children I needed that money for.

She's just pissed off at me because as much as I love my animals, they are not my children like her pack of dogs are hers. I am not willing to pay thousands of dollars to prolong the life of an elderly dog. I don't have credit cards, I use cash for my bills, so who's willing to give me a couple of thousand so I can take the dog to the vet, have all the labs done, get MRIs, take him to the specialist in Annapolis, pay for his medications and drive me hundred of miles every week to got to swim therapy? I don't have the means to spend thousands on an an elderly dog that has had a very long happy life. Sue me. I'm a bad pet owner. I'm also not willing to allow my house to go into forclosure or file bankrupty to care for my pets when I'm a single mom and my CHILD comes first. I am not independently wealthy. I struggle every day to do what I can for my PETS. They are loved, and well fed, and cared for to the best of my ability. They aren't tied out back to a tree with collars inbedded in their neck, dehydrated in the summer sun, or frozen to the concrete.

Just because I am not independanty weathly and put my pets before my child, does not mean I don't love my pets. Report me. Is there a CPS for dog owners? I'm guilty. Come rescue my pets!!!!!! They are all so ill cared for. :cds:

I've had two dogs live to be 14 and 16 respectfully. I don't have Muchausen Syndrome when it comes to my dogs. They don't get every single rare disease dogs get. I don't spend every dime I have running my pets back and forth to the vet all the time.

So, who's willing to contribute to the SMG pet fund? :coffee: Or who wants to adopt a 4 year old shih tzu, a 15 year old shih tzu, a 4 year old boxer (this is my son's dog) and a 1 year old cockatiel?? You must be willing to put these animials number one on your list above any other human, including yourself.

so its good that you have not taken the dog to the vet in years.... and that anytime something ever happened to one of the dogs you call me for help and advice as I have over 15 yrs of vet. experience... the dogs were never on HW meds... and im sure the boxer is close to running out now and you will not follow thru like the rest of the dogs....

prolonging life is different than regular vet checks...

and you know for a fact i treat my dogs in a conservative manor... yes i will do what I can within reason... because its my responsibility..

you are just butt hurt because i have not responded back to you and answered your question.

What is the right way?

What you are saying that before anyone every gives a home to a pet, they must be willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars if that pet should ever have a health issue, especially when they become elderly?

So for all of you that have adopted a pet and given it a home for 15 years, that pet would have been better off not being adopted and left to die at a shelter.

DO YOU FORGET, I ADOPTED THESE DOGS FROM THE ASPCA? I didn't go out and spend thousands of dollars on dogs like you did, FROM A BREEDER. I gave these dogs a home, that they didn't have.

No, I'm F*cking pissed off at you because you are acting like a total biatch.

Yes, I've called you for advice on the dogs before. Isn't it funny that you've called me for medical advice on yourself? Why did you just have to go to the dentist and have a bunch of dental work done? Do you go to your 6 month cleanings? Really? My child does. When was the last time you went to the eye doctor for your regular check up? Really? My child does. DId you get your flu shot this year? Have you had your annual pap smear and Mammogram? But your dogs have their teeth cleaned, and they get all their shots and their checkups.
Get a grip, I have a child to care for as well. I'm glad you are able to spend every cent you have on your hoard of dogs. I can not.

You proved your point. You are the best animal owner in the world!!! Congratulations.

Have you gone to the Well Pet Clinic? They have greatly reduced fees compared to most vets. I would consider making an appointment with them for at least a well check and then at least you would have a better idea as to what could be going on and it wouldn't be thousands of dollars to do that. They are absolutely wonderful people in there. I donate to them as well as used them personally for Isabella's spay. Everybody else wanted to charge me an arm and a leg because she was so tiny.

I have an old boy. His litter brother passed last June. He will be 15 in May. I don't think he has much longer, but just curious if anyone has experienced this as well. He hasn't been going up or down the stairs in the last 2 years or so. The last two weeks, he's been making a be line up the stairs and going under my bed. When he and his brother were young, that was one of their favorite places to hang out. What are the chances he's doing this because he's ready to cross the rainbow bridge? I've heard of dogs hiding and passing away peacefully in their favorite place. I just feel like that's what he's doing. Is it possible he can sense it's coming and doesn't want my daughter to be tramatized by finding him in his bed? I just have a feeling that's why he's going under my bed, so I will find him and not her. It won't be much longer, but I do not feel he is suffering at this time. If he gets to that point like his brother, I will have to assist with his crossing. Not looking forward to that again. I did have the talk with my daughter again this morning that he is old and doesn't have much longer with us. I hate this part of being a pet owner! :bawl:

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. My dog was 18 when I had to have her put down. I'm not sure about the hiding under the bed thing, but, my vet did tell me that dogs are social creatures, as such, if they are feeling sick they will run off to be by themselves as a survival mode. If they were in a pack, they would be chased off or attacked by other pack members. My old girl would go into the bathroom and try to get behind the toilet. She would stay in there for about a 1/2 hour and then come back out and be her sweet, normal self after that. Again, sorry to hear your dog isnt doing well.

Thank you

Under my bed was one of their favorite places to go, so I do not think he's hiding. He used to sleep in the bed with me (when he was younger and could jump down), or under the bed every night.

Wow, this thread got good fast.

Animal Control will probably meet me tonight to take possession of all my pets.

CPS will be called in tomorrow

I'll be banned from SOMD.com for being a bad pet owner and mother :cds:

I've already been unfriended on facebook and phone calls and texts go unanswered. I'm a horrible person. :drama: :butthurt:

Can I have a :butthurt: smilie? Seems to be directed toward me often these last few months.

He's just taking a trip down memory lane that's all. It doesn't mean that he's going to die. I aplaud you for rescuing your pets. The fact that the little guy is going to be 15 here soon, lets me know you are a great pet mom.
