Rabies shot needed ASAP

I have a shih tzu who was just adopted - freebie over the net - and he is in desperate need of a grooming. No one will touch him w/o a rabies shot...where can I get a cheap one quick? He will be seeing our vet but needs a grooming first, since we know he has skin problems.

I'd think a vet visit would be in order BEFORE anything. If he has skin problems, he should see a vet...not a groomer.

Didn't you get any of his prior vet records?

My perspective is that to treat the skin, you need to be able to access it and allow for medication to be put there. St Marys Veterinary does not offer grooming services anymore and that is where we go. Upon calling for an appointment,we were told that he should come in for his rabies - at which point we will also be charged for the visit, and an exam fee,etc..and then will have to come back for any skin issues as they will need him to have a complete shave down in oder to do a skin scrape/meds. So - it makes more sense to have him groomed first - then one visit does skin issues, check up,etc. So again - the question is not what to do - but WHERE TO GO?

The Vet Tech. can shave him at the time of visit. Call and have it all done at the same time.

unfortunately no groomer will take him without a rabies shot. Just for the fact that they don't want the chance of an unvaccinated dog to bite them. Also there could be a chance that the dog could be carrying some type of mange, mites or other contagious "critters". Getting a "once over" by a vet will easy your mind as well and your dogs discomfort. I'm sure you don't want any mites or mange in your house?!!

Good luck with your new friend. :yahoo:

Am I missing something here?
Take the dog to the vet, get the shot, the get him groomed.. Whats the problem?
Hell you could just shave the little guy yourself right?

i can understand not wanting to pay for back to back vet visits, but all she really needs to do is buy some clippers, trim him down and take him to the vet. you can get the clippers for less than the cost of most vet visits, and it doesn't have to look nice if you are just shaving him down
