Raiders & Invaders in Leonardtown

Itown81,...it might have been a few years since High School History but 1814 was the major invasion of the Bay by the Brits...this is a bicentennial. The name.....had NO effect on turn-out. I am certain.

"Nothing really explained what is going on? Was it a festival? Was it a history reenactment? A 60's British rock band? What vendors were there, and what did they offer? I think from what I see posted here, it was like the beach party, but with a history theme."

Ummm, did you look at the extensive website? It explained a LOT of the activities,...the "newspaper" had helpful maps & highlights. The schedule was posted a WHILE back.

I hope you find something amazing...because it is VERY hard to get a festival up & running,...you just didn't take the time to look over all the information or appreciate the work that went into it. (and you do this for a living????? oh, ok.)

Vrai...
"I'm wondering if it's their marketing or the demographic that's making this somewhat difficult?"
You may have made a run out to Waterford for their October craft fair....the key is RELIABILITY--an annual event that always draws craftsmen from hundreds of miles. They don't re-invent the wheel every single year. Staying with a predictable theme...(Ann Marie gardens??) seems to build every year.--Chemistry has to be created.
I think the other concern I heard was conflicting events...there were other sites that were running events--drawing from the same crowd.

ONE more thing....I have attended LOTs of events over the past 30 years,...every attempt to draw in a Black audience,...has fizzled. Poetry, Singing, a Play, a book signing,...with lots of publicity will always get a trickle of interest from the Black community. I will defer to anyone down at Jeff-Pat for their annual Family day,...I cannot address their success/failure.

I heard about his event a few months ago and started watching the website. The website was VERY well done and updated often with the entertainment line-up and planned activities which showed me how much time, money and effort was being put into the event. I made arrangements for several family members from the Frederick area to plan to spend this weekend in Leonardtown and they did.

The setup was very well done in anticipation of a much larger crowd than what actually showed up. We enjoyed the historical reinactments and stories. We enjoyed the entertainment. We had an ABSOLUTE BLAST with the tribute band that closed out Saturday night. The folks who stayed for that part of the concert didn't want it to end! The setting was perfect along the waterfront with vendors behind the crowd for easy access to on-site refreshments. I believe the biggest drawback to having such an event on the wharf is the hill, but the organizers made a good effort of offerince shuttle service to help those who couldn't or didn't want to make the trek. I was down and up once on Friday and three times on Saturday. The good side to that last trek up on Saturday night was we were all still running on adrenline from the concert... The bus service back to the college (and other sites) was an awesome plus! Overall, very well organized and I hope like heck they offer things such as concerts at the wharf on a regular basis to draw visitors to the town square. Very nice indeed.

THIS is something that annoys me regarding events in this area - they don't coordinate with each other to avoid conflict. It's not even just the tri-county area - St. Mary's is the worst offender for having two major events going on on the same weekend and pulling from the same crowd. Anyone who bitches that there's nothing to do around here has rocks in their head. There's actually too much to do, all on the same day. Seriously, you look at our calendar and it's packed with local events.

This coming Saturday is the Crab Festival AND the St. Clement's Island Heritage Day event. Annmarie Garden also chose that day to have their Chili in the Garden event. All three of these events are going to be fun and a great day for the whole family....so which one do you choose to attend? I remember a client complaining that their event didn't get a good turnout - um, well, next time don't schedule it the same day as the Oyster Festival or Blessing of the Fleet.

The organizers really need to pay more attention to what else is going on.

Spread out...was only part of the problem.....
You could tell a lot of planning went into it (access guards, straw bales, tents, performances, medical assistance, LOTS of vendors)
BUT...I would be curious:
How did most of the attendees LEARN of the event?
A) Radio?
B) Newspaper?
C) Word of Mouth?
D) On Line?
E) Signs?

C-D and E
I'm just seeing this now... hadn't seen this advertised anywhere.

See and I find this very curious. It has been advertised in local papers several times over several weeks... even making the cover page. It has been advertised and talked about on local radio shows. Threads have been started about this event weeks ago and bumped ever so often talking about it. Signs have been up in several places in the county. I'm at a loss as to what more could have been done...

Graduations and graduation parties are going on... Absolute worst weekend to have an event.

How can that be? It was literally all over the place. They had ads in every local media, online and dirt world, including billboards.

How could you have missed it?

No idea. I never saw it advertised (that I recall) until this morning. Never heard any friends mention it either.

Chasey, that's a real question - what could they have done to bring their event to your attention? Marketing is undergoing a change and reaching people is becoming more difficult for a number of reasons. How could they have made you personally aware of their event?

Other than calling me directly, who knows. It sounds like they did everything right.

Relay was also this weekend. Might have been another reason for a low turnout.

That's it... I'm calling you directly next time.

I think the low turnout was because there were MANY local events going on in the in St. Mary's and Calvert and as Hank pointed out the first weekend of June is typically graduation party weekend.

My daughter got a flyer or something about it and she lives in California near Wildewood. Of course I had already told her about her about it and reserved the grandson for the day.

According to the calendar, Sotterly Plantation had a War of 1812 Event on Saturday at the same time all this was going on. Again, couldn't things be better coordinated? I saw signs when I was driving thru St Mary's County a couple weeks ago and my first thought was it had something to do with Youth Football registration or something like that. I totally forgot about it by the time I got home and would have had time to look it up on the computer.

Several locations, including Sotterley, had events yesterday to tie in with Friday & Saturdays events.

Calvert had the Sun and Music Festival. Very low turnout. Again, I blame graduations. These event planners need some serious help. First thing you do is weigh out the pros and cons of dates you select. And in the Sun/Music Fest case, don't charge $20. Ridiculous!

If I wasn't attending Raiders and Invaders I would have attended Sun and Music Fest mainly because I LOVE ME some Kelly Bell...

He always puts on a great show and he did yesterday for 2 plus hours... Too bad there wasn't more people there to enjoy it!

I am so very blessed
I saw the title, and assumed that it was a L'town high school event of some sort. Because of the title, I never once investigated to see what the event was all about.
