has allergies. Took her to the vet today because of the limping on the back right leg. She has arthritis in both legs. Then we talked about the paw licking. Her paws look awful and they did when I got her. So, I paid $175 for adoptiong her, $200+ to go to the vet the week after I got her because her face had not healed up and she still needed antibiotics for that, now $135 for today's appointment. She has an allergy they can't identify, but it has turned into a yeast infection in her feet, which they are treating......Ya know, when they charge your $175 for a dog that is "vet checked" and good to go, ya got to wonder. The vet was good though. She did tell me to go ahead with a lot more aspirin than I was giving her and to continue with the Hartz joint treatment. I'm wondering what kind of vet CAWL takes the dogs to.

Change Her Food.

I have regretted not getting what I was told to get. Heading over the bridge tomorrow. When she really opened her paws for me today, they were horrible, though she doesn't lick them if we are around. Only at night when she thinks I am asleep or, I assume, when we aren't home. I tell her to stop and she does.

Explain the situation to Kate, if she's there. She should be. Razzie's problem sounds two fold. The Canidae Platinum is great for the arthritis but it may not be the best for allergies.

I am of the belief that the proper food will give you a new dog.

BS, ask your vet about Deramaxx. It's a NSAID for arthritic dogs. BF's mom uses it on their 13 year old dog, and he acts like a puppy when he's on it. They don't keep him on it all the time, but give it to him when he's acting particularly slow or stiff. It really makes a difference.

I'm going straight over there after work. Her paws look awful. She's still chasing the frisbee every chance she gets, but she's got to be in pain. BTW, Vrai loves her.....:lmao:

She has no problem when a ball or frisbee is involved. It's a problem after she lays down for a while and then gets up. They are being careful of what they put her on because they want to treat this yeast infection first. After a week of those meds, the vet will see if she is tolerating them and then give her more, if she is tolerating them. Hopefully, her paws will get better. If you met her and threw a frisbee for her, you'd never know anything is wrong with her.

I'm telling ya....

be VERY careful of the meds they're giving her.

Do your own research..read about yeast infections/feet/dogs/diet.

It takes some work but if you are proactive in your pet's veterinary care and learn about your pet and how the diet can influence your pet's health, you will be amazed at how making a few simple changes can make all the difference in the world.

I'm stupid about pets cause Tipper never had any issues until the end. They put her on Ketoconazole, 200 mg, 2 tabs a day, 2 x a day. And I have to give it to her with a "fatty meal" or the vet said "cheese." I'm not starting her on it until Wednesday because if it upsets her tummy, she said it would take three days to do that, so I thought it would be good to be home if she starts yakking.

well im sorry that you got an animal from a rescue that was in bad shape. usually they do a good job.
i worked for some 2 very good vets in my 8 years of being a vet tech so i'll give you the advice that i can and take what you will.
the ketoconazole is good for yeast infections. it does work well, for the infection that is. you have to find out why she is licking her feet. some dogs lick their feet because they are bored or have separation issues. other dogs lick their feet because of allergies, such as grass, floor cleaner (like something you mop your floors with or even carpet deoderizer) or maybe even something you put in the grass like fertilizer. however, jumping to food allergies isn't aways a good thing. most the time if its just their feet its not a food allergy. it would present its self all over the poor dogs body because is something its ingested. if it is only the paws it was something it came in contact with. switching foods usually wont help. the more types of food you expose them to the more problems you will have later on trying to find a food that they aren't allergic to. like putting them on the lamb, duck or venison. then your only options are the very expensive z/d or z/d ultra that you can only get at a vet.
im suprised that they didn't recommend trying some benadryl to see if it helps keep her from licking. they will lick their paws because of irritation cased by allergies which leads to a yeast infection.
as far as the aspirin goes. its not a bad thing. sometimes thats all a dog needs. if it seems to help great but sometimes other meds are needed like rimadyl or daramaxx. the only problem with those is you need to run bloodwork to check liver and kidney function because it can cause problems with prolonged use. glucosamine and msm are great to help lubricate the joints, of course these aren't pain meds just something to help along with.
ok i think ive rambled on long enough. sorry i was bored. hope it helped.

Are you still giving her the yogurt? That will help with the upset tummy.

BS GAL I hope they can figure out what is wrong with her. She loves her mom. She wanted to get as close as she could to you.:howdy:

Were you there yesterday? Do you work there or did you come in with the big boxer?

Oh, never mind. You've been to my house and met her. :banghead:

Hope Razzie gets better!!! My lab has food allergies and does the paw licking every once in awhile..

I saw a dog in Lowes on Sunday that is available for adoption at the Well Pet clinic.. I fell in love with her.. I can't stop thinking about her!!!!!

Does anyone know if they have a website for the Well Pet's available adoptions?

Call them when they open. 301-866-0303. They generally have the dogs for adoption at Well Pet on Saturday mornings. I know it isn't SMAWL, but another rescue organization and I don't believe they are as difficult to adopt from as SMAWL is.
