Regarding Calvert County Tax Increase

We don't know for sure about the details of the backroom deals with Dominion - except that 800M in property taxes were forgiven (Dominion pays no income taxes) in exchange for a "payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT)" of either 20M or 25M. I expect the commissioners will now forgive even that.

Why does Dominion claim "Calvert County is to receive an additional $45 million a year on average in just the first five years after the project is in operation." and that the annual property tax increase they pay is - or will be - $40 million...?

Are they lying?

lmao......commissioners are crooks huh?

Calvert County will raise real property taxes for the first time in 29 years, and local income taxes for the first time in 13 years as part of a $246.8 million budget the county commissioners approved Tuesday.

Even with the increase, Calvert County’s property taxes are the ninth lowest in Maryland, the county said.

The hike in income taxes puts the county near the state average and in line with Southern Maryland’s other two counties, Charles and St. Mary’s.

So because Calvert isn't run as ####ty as the other counties in the state, it's okay?

Even when one commissioner came out and claimed County residents would have a "lower tax burden"?

No. The first payment is due with the FY 2018 taxes (next July) and is estimated to be between $20M and $25M a year the first 4 or 5 years. If the stars align and the plant runs at full capacity the 5th year number is estimated to run up to $45M a year.

Here is what some people don't know about the County tax rate and how it plays into going to Annapolis for money. When a County, or Town, goes to the Board of Public Works for grant funding from the State (for whatever the project is) they look at the tax load. If the members of the BPW (the Governor, the Comptroller and Treasurer) don't think that the County, or Town, has maximized its revenue the request is denied.

Like him or not, Mike Miller has been able to get Calvert a fair amount of money over the years by supporting those projects.

The above is separate from State Bond Bills which is "free money" embedded in legislation. You still have to go to Begging Day and make your case but it's easier to do.

Yes they are. "“Not one of the county commissioners wanted to raise taxes,” said Calvert County Board President Evan Slaughenhoupt, in a news release." What a joke. Did someone twist their arms to vote for and pass it? What is wrong with being at the bottom the taxing list anyway?

There is no evidence to support that claim. Even the very pro power plant MD PSC analysis - and conclusion, showed a highly negative economic impact - and the tax forgiveness was a major factor.

If there was any possibility of such taxes, why would the politicians who know what is hidden in their non-disclosure agreement with Dominion, engage in the political suicide of raising both property and income taxes?

Why not simply rescind the ongoing massive tax breaks ?

Non-disclosure agreements between politicians and the corporations receiving tax breaks from them should be illegal.

That's what I understood too..pretty much. Thanks.

There's a better chance of being struck by lightning while being bitten by a shark than this alignment of stars.

In the extraordinary event they ever pay $45M, it would still be less than their subsidy. I didn't get a thank you note from Tom Farrell II. Did you?

Hey, Evan Slaughenhoupt, Pat Nutter, Tom Hejl. You all aren't very popular all of a sudden.

P.S. You f***ed up!

Is an additional 25m more than they pay now a bad thing? Is 45m even that much more better than what they pay now? I'm not following your theme very well...or are you one of those "what the government does not steal from businesses is a "cost" to taxpayers" kind of economist? As I business owner myself, I see the fallacy in that point of view.

There's a sucker born every minute - PT Barnum.

Even the commissioners don't believe Dominion will pay up.

You flapping your keyboard gums does not in any way negate the information that has been a matter of public record for quite some time now. In fact..it just makes you look silly.

Now..you have proof that Dominion is not going to actually make those tax payments, post it or link to it. I'd really like to see it. And I'd like to see Dominion's explanation of "why not" too.

What part of "in lieu of taxes" do you not understand? The PILOT is not "in addition to".

I don't have proof that you will not win the lottery tonight - but I believe the probability of it happening is very low.

Yes, I'm sure Dominion's army of lawyers and lobbyists are working hard to make sure their employer pays taxes like you and I do. Yawn.

I will vote for Evan, Pat, and Tom again in the next election, not so sure about Hart and Weems, whom i did vote for in the last election. I do believe they would rescind the tax increase, when the Dominion tax revenue starts to actually come in.
Again JMHO.
