relocating to pax riv/ lex park q's!

if you go to lincoln military housing's pax river page (the people who run mil. housing there), they have pictures that aren't any of the layouts I've seen, and I was just wondering if anyone knew what those homes were, because they looked really nice.

The interior pictures they have are mainly officer housing (well some are Sheppard Terrace which is getting ready to be torn down), but the last few pics (the galley kitchen/bath) I believe are from the renovated units in Glenn Forest. Now this is LMH property, but it is not directly on the base, but not very far away either. The houses in the exterior pics are officer's units as well.

The Glen Forest pics are not officer housing... they are just actually really nice inside... :yahoo:

Yeah, they are very nice inside, but they have very very small kitchen. That's only thing that's bad about the Glen Forest housing. The bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. are very nice and big.

wow, thanks for the overwheliming reponse everyone! I had a blonde momenth last night with the whole glen forest thing, i did know they were on base housing, but in all my frustration of trying to figure this out, I didn't even realize that's what people were talking about! Lol, I get wound up pretty tightly about things, and this was no exception. It's nice to hear all these things about the community though....I think our number one priority will definitely be military housing right now...because when it comes down to it, we'd basically have $400 after housing if we lived off base and rent was $850, and seeing how the places we actually would be considering are $1000+, living off base would hurt us....plus, I didn't realize, but because of the way the split your pay and bah into the two week pay periods, we'd also have to hope to find a landlord flexible enough to let us split the rent! I'm definitely going to keep all your tips in mind though if on base housing doesn't work out for some unforseen reason. Does anyone know if there's a wait? I know someone previously mentioned they didn't think there would be, just wondering if anyone else had any input. Also, with on base housing, I know we're looking at trying to get into glen forest, but if you go to lincoln military housing's pax river page (the people who run mil. housing there), they have pictures that aren't any of the layouts I've seen, and I was just wondering if anyone knew what those homes were, because they looked really nice. Anyone have any suggestions as far as jobs? I'm thinking of trying to get a job at jcpenney or old navy over in california, and I know people have mentioned trying to do secretarial work for contractors....I'm looking to work full time, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm open! To be honest, I do think I'm going to like the area. Believe me, I'm sure it sounds weird, but I'm looking forward to having nothing to do. Where I come from, life isn't so fast paced like it is down here, and I do like it down here but the traffic and some elements of city life just aren't my cup of tea. Again, thank you all so so much!
my last duty station was there. Last time I was at the housing office there they had a list of homes/apts for rent that is not always available through the realtors. They might be able to fax or scan/email you some of that info.

I recommend the base housing there. Short of Lemoore, I believe Glen Forest is the best base housing available for E6 and below in the states.

Welcome to southern Maryland, Ashnavygirl!

Check with the real estate agencies - a lot of times they handle rentals and can get you a better deal than an apartment complex.

And forget office work - the pay sucks. If you can wait tables, that's where the money is.

The good news is I don't smoke, lol. Yeah, we'll be shopping at the comissary, so that will save us some. The apartments I'm looking at are called Indian Bridge and they are owned by cherry cove. It's a two bedroom apartment, 865 sq ft, which is similar to what we're living in now, and it's comfortable for us, seeing how it's only my husband and myself. The rent there is $850 per month, and yes, that's the cheapest I've found. That's why I wish I had some info about them, because if we got in there, we'd definitely be saving money by living off base. They also cover water, sewer, and trash, which is nice. Hmm, I don't understand why the electricity is so high, I guess I'll have to call the company or something because that would kill us, a $300 a month elec. bill...being military, we don't have to register our vehicle. which is nice. As far as whether or not the base is going anywhere, you can go look right at the BRAC info, all the northeastern bases are pretty much being realigned, and this was on there...we wanted to be stationed in Brunswick, ME, but they're already moving squadrons down to Jacksonville. Maybe they decided not to realign this one though, I don't know for sure, all I know is that it could affect us, so that's what matters to me, lol! Anyone have any suggestions on real estate agents? I've been searching online for houses for rent, there isn't squat listed.

My husband lived in Indian Bridge for over 7 yrs and I lived there for 4 yrs. We never had any problems and liked it. Our electric usually was around $100 each month. They take care of the apts. You will find the office staff nice and helpful.

Hey all! My husband recently recieved orders to Pax River Nas, and I'm looking into apartments in the lexington park area, such as the indian bridge ones owned by cherry cove. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the area, things to watch out for and take note of, possibly some things about the apartments, and just anything in general. I know I've heard alot of bad things about MD because of Washington, but that's to be expected. We're going to be stationed there for two years, and I certainly want to make the best out of it, and would like to be prepared with as much info as possible. Anything will help, and if you take the time to reply to me, I will greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

I don't kow if the apartments you're considering are listed, but you might want to check out www.apartmentratings.com. I would encourage everyone to share their experiences or relay their friends' experiences on this site. It would really help those of us who are relocating to SoMD.

Okay, so I just relocated here from VA beach... we moved into our apt that cost us $1190 a month (cheaper than va beach thats for sure) The most expensive part of relocating here was registering our cars, in MD they charge you the difference in the sales tax from the state your moving from, i.e - I moved from VA and the sales tax was 3% here it is 5% I had to pay the 2% difference. It is a very small town here (NOTHING TO DO!). You should look at renting a house, maybe you can find some better deals than apts. GOOD LUCK!

Uhm, the sales tax here in San Diego is 8.5%...so does that mean we'll pay nothing to register our car?

Hi Ashnavygirl, We have been stationed @ Pax twice in the last 12 years and are looking forward to our third tour in a couple of years. We love the area.
It is like anyplace else: it is what you make of it. I think base housing is the way for you to go. Also, since you are relatively new in the Navy, I would recommend that you contact Fleet and Family Services and take the "Compass Class" it is full of great information. My husband has been in for 22+ years and I took the class last year and learned somethings.
Good Luck:howdy:
P.S. Pax River is not going anywhere. People will be moving to Pax!!

Yes you will pay a 100.00 tax fee if your tax was more in another state. We came from Texas and paid more tax on our 2002 Kia Rio and we ended paying after all the fees and hundred dollar tax fee almost 400.00. Definitely isn't cheap getting your car registered here!

I thought if you were active military that you just renewed the tags thru your home state?????? Why are you registering your vehicles in Maryland??????

I also agree that you have some time before being required to change your registration for your car. We kept everything home state for our Blazer until retiring. We bought our 2nd car new here so there was no "felt" hassle. When our driver license came due we just went to the MD DMV. It was a hassle for me because I had a few name changes and MD requires 2 or 3 NAME proofs. We got past he changing of license plates later when we purchased our new next here. I have heard a number of complaints though regarding the cost of changing to MD tags. My thought, if you're active duty, don't plan to stay, and you state allows it, stick with your home state to save some money.

I'm a crusty old retired Senior Chief who lives in Lexington Park and works on the base.

Please, take the advise you've been given about Housing and live there. As a young sailor with a young wife, you guys will struggle to make ends meet if you live on the economy. $1250 BAH is nothing to what you're going to need to live in a rental around here. I have guys who I work with who make 21-24 dollars an hour and sometimes find it hard to make ends meet.

Keep your chin up. This is a nice place to live and work.

Yeah, I definitely agree as to the "it is what you make of it" part of what you said...that's why it threw me for a loop when I was reading all these bad things, not in here, but through some other places...because I'm actually pretty excited to go there. I've been in Pensacola since October, and it just isn't me..I like florida for vacationing, and that's about it! Do they offer the compass class there? I know I was wanting to do it when I came down here, but they didn't have it at this base. I would actually really like to do that, and when I get there, I really want to be invoved in spouse clubs, and other activities, since I won't know anyone, and would like to build relationships with people...like here, I know the people I work with, and some of the boys from the base, and that's it. It something were to happen, I wouldn't know who to call! And if my husband is at work or has to stay for duty, I don't have anyone to do anything with, which annoys me. As far as Pax River not going anywhere, I hope you're right. When I read the BRAC information, I was shocked, because we actually wanted to be stationed in Brunswick, ME, but it said that most of the northeastern bases were getting realigned. Maybe they can change their minds though, because I can almost guarantee that my husband will want to get stationed there again after these two years are up. Does anyone know where we go on our base to talk to someone about living on base there? He has to leave for his C school for a month, on march 5/6, so we don't have much time, and I definitely want to make sure everything is taken care of before he goes, so we don't have to hope there's somewhere for us to go when we get there! Thanks so much for all the information everyone!

I would not worry about BRAC. PAX is not going anywhere anytime soon. Since your only going to be here a couple years, don't fret what you can't control. Besides,by the time they finally closed it your husband will probably be a Chief.

I think the housing office is now run by Lincoln. Maybe you can google them and get an idea of the housing.

Also, don't be afraid to have your husband call the Command Master Chief. That is what he/she is there for.

They will be bringing more commands here, not taking away....
