Do they offer the compass class there? I know I was wanting to do it when I came down here, but they didn't have it at this base.

Most bases do have compass available, sometimes they may call it something different, or maybe it just wasn't creating a big enough interest to enough people, and they didn't feel the need to have it there. Try to get base housing.

The Indian Bridge Apts are not in the best area. My friend just moved from there and if she had known what they were like before she shouldn't have moved there.

Hickory Hills are not bad and are safe.

We are very happy here. It's a beautiful place to live. I will just echo what others have said...please consider base housing first. Especially if you have one vehicle. If you want to take classes, go shopping, etc, it will be much easier for your husband to get to work if you are already on base. He can ride his bike or get a ride with a coworker. Once he gets a hard copy of his orders, get on the housing list ASAP.

hey everyone! First, I want to again say thank you for all the advice you've posted, my husband and I really appreciate it. With that being said, I just wanted to tell everyone that we've decided that we want to live on base, so hopefully that will work out. With all the stress already involved in the situation, it'll be easier for us to live on base, and I think it'll also work out better in the end of all things said. So now, we're between a rock and a hard place with trying to get the ball rolling. Any navy people who could help, we'd love ya for it! My husband graduates from this school on the 4th and has to be to virginia for another school by the 8th. He'll be there for a month, then we'll be able to move to MD. My questions are..where do we start, what do we do? I don't have the faintest idea about how to do this...I know we have to apply for housing, but do we have to go through someone on base, or do I just contact the housing office at pax river? I know also that we have to go to the personal property office for a bunch of crap. We're planning on doing a dity move, so any advice there will also help. Thanks for everything guys, it's nice hearing from you all!

First, stop and take a deep breath, maybe 2 or 3!! I know it is both exciting and nerve racking to make your first move. Those of us here who have military experience have been there.

You have a lot of tools available to you right where you are. Go to Family services, housing office and then household goods. That should get you pointed in the right direction. They are PAID to help young people like you get through this.

I've never done a dity move so I can't help you on that except to say, weigh the pros and cons. If your going to pull a trailer, is your car in good enough shape? If not, don't pull a trailer and let the Navy move your stuff. If your car breaks down on the road, any money you might have made is gone. If you dity and don't know exactly where your going to live, where are you going to put all your stuff? If the Navy moves you, they will store it until you have a permanent place to live. You might have to live in a hotel for several days until you either find an apartment or get into housing.

It's good your doing some research on this. You just have to get to the places I mentioned and they will help you.

I think the main number for the base is 301-342-3500...can anyone verify this? That should get you started.

I also don't think you're going to get right into housing, unless things have changed a lot over the years.

Family Service Center

The Family Service Center at your present command, has all of the information and POC's that you will need and I believe they have counselors to help with the move. I know they have information packages on all Navy commands, so you should be able to get phone numbers for all of the offices at Pax River.

Base housing gets in in as soon as you get here... they wont make you wait. Believe me when I say that it is worth you BAH to live on base... once you get your first electric bill, you will be in shock. I about hit the floor... but you do what you think will benifit your family.

What about the new housing giong up in First Colony (behind Giant) and Wildewood? People have already started to move into the First Colony units.

I believe those are officers quarters. I don't believe they would qualify for those anyway because they have no children at this time.

Hey all! My husband recently recieved orders to Pax River Nas, and I'm looking into apartments in the lexington park area, such as the indian bridge ones owned by cherry cove. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the area, things to watch out for and take note of, possibly some things about the apartments, and just anything in general. I know I've heard alot of bad things about MD because of Washington, but that's to be expected. We're going to be stationed there for two years, and I certainly want to make the best out of it, and would like to be prepared with as much info as possible. Anything will help, and if you take the time to reply to me, I will greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

I highly suggest you look into Wildwood Apartments, their newer, nicer and I know there's a security person in the neighborhood 24/7. They also have older apartments too you can look at as well, but i think they are smaller. If you go above Great Mills its not as bad. There's apartments near Gate 3 but i can't rememeber what its called and they aren't bad either. Good luck and hope you find something!

No those will not all be officer quarters, but right now since there are only a few open, and they are trying to vacate Shepard Terrace on base officers seem to be getting the precedence.
