Bch, if you do not understand the difference between someone coming on here looking for a fight and someone coming on to ask a simple question, it's possible that you need to find another forum to play in. My forum, my rules. You don't like it, there's the door.

What do you mean "lately"?
This has always been Vrai's house of double-standards!

Hi Sherry!

Welcome (soon!) to southern Maryland! It's a nice area, and Maryland has alot to see...we're about an hour from downtown Washington, DC, an hour from Baltimore, and about 45 minutes to Annapolis...and MOST of the people you'll meet here are nice!

Housing is cheaper the further out you go from Washington, D.C. I would start looking NOW because there's not much on the market these days!
Hopefully we haven't scared you away!

Welcome, Sherry. Don't mind the kids - they're a bit cranky today since they stayed up late Saturday and didn't get naps. ( to them!)

I really think the area is beautiful (from the photos my husband brought back.)
It is - right now the leaves are changing and it's gorgeous. Lots of water everywhere and spectacular views abound.
He will be working for Sabre as an instructor of S.A.P. They get very upset if you call it sap. HA
Will he be working in Lexington Park or on the base? I work on base in IT, so I'm quite familar with what he does.
We are originally from Tennessee and are dyed in the wool Tennessee fans! Hope we can find a few more like us, if not, just look for the UT flags!
There are a few around here - I know of one in particular who is a rabid fan, so you won't be completely alone here.

I am an avid gardener, so feel free to ask any questions. We are definitely in zone 7, although if you go to the very tip of St. Mary's they're almost in zone 8. Frost-free time is usually from April 15 to October 15, so we have a good, long growing season. Most soil has a lot of clay, so soil enrichments like compost and manure are a must. You can pretty much grow anything here that you want to - heck, I have figs and kiwi in my garden.

Our weather is not too bad, but can get extreme on rare occasions. Last year we had very little snow, but we've have years where the snow just dumped on us. Summers can be brutal with the 3 H's - hazy, hot, and humid. This year wasn't bad except we had a drought. But we've been getting some good rains lately, and we're starting to make a dent in the deficit.

Again, welcome!

Somebody's gotta stop you guys from scaring all the fresh meat...er, new members away. Geez, give them a chance to settle in before you bring out the welcome wagon. :bonk: :twitch: Why do I feel like Julie McCoy from the "Love Boat" now?
moi? have to much to drink saturday? I don't think I had enough to be honest. :ohwell:
No, it wasn't YOU who had too much to drink. Thank god there was a live tree named John for support. But it was quite interesting to see you get out of that beach chair. Fortunately, no face plant in the fire! :razz2:

jobs in st mary's are difficult unless you can crack the family network. this i've completely found out...

of course, i've negated even trying and i'm working temp jobs through manpower in an attempt to find full time employment. i gotta say, doing it this way, i'm now making more in a week than i was making 2 weeks before...and thats just been in the first few months.

either way, it's a pretty good area down here. lots of diversity in the people, and (i've found) most people down in "the county" are pretty tolerant.

enjoy the stay!

finally, someone else who sees it the same as I do ... the problem isn't finding job advertisements ... most of the places HAVE to advertise them cause it is the law in some cases. However, when it comes down to it, most people already know who they are going to hire for a job because they know them personally or are doing someone a favor, and are just going through the legal ropes. that's how a lot of jobs (especially state and fed) are created. :ohwell:

yeah, what can you do really?

like i said, i worked around it. i'm temping at the verizon store right by starbucks (near the target shopping center) and i'm really REALLY loving it. hoping to come on as a full time employee.
honestly, the people there are great and will never b/s you or try to take advantage/

so, although it's not a definite that the GOBN (good ol boy network) will stop you from working in a good place, it's really a big problem down here.
