Remember When...

I guess. My dad owned the Sunoco in Suitland for about 25 years. We used to go to Dino's all the time but I was too young to remember where it was. I don't think it's there anymore.

Wasn't Dino's on Suitland Road close to Branch Avenue? I remember we used to go to this YUMMY place to eat when I was a kid. We'd pull out of Iverson Mall and shoot across Branch Avenue and it was on the right.

We used to go to Iverson Mall, Dino's and Memco. :ohwell:

Nowadays I don't like traveling that area in broad daylight.

My mom used to take us to Iverson Mall at least once a week. We always ate lunch at Roy Rogers or Hot Shoppes. I remember buying records from Montgomery Ward. I used to get my clothes from Petite Street (now 5-7-9), Ormonds, and there was another store I can't remember - maybe Lerner?

My parents had a membership to Memco. I remember when it became Bradlees. My SIL used to work there when she graduated from high school.

We used to go up there almost every other Thursday night or Saturday afternoon.

The Arby's up there had the BEST fast food french fries. :yum:

Then there was Farrell's Ice Cream in Landover Mall.

:howdy: Oh yeah. And I spent a many a evenin' out in the strippin house too.

:eyebrow:

My grandma used to strip the tobacco in the winter time. Believe it or not, the stripping room was an old school bus, equipped with a heater. I used to go down there and play bus driver while grandma stripped tobacco.

I was too little for that. But I used to pick up those green tobacco worms and play with them while everyone else was cutting, spearing, and hanging. Yeah, I was weird.

:huggy:

Tradition gone .....:bawl:

I loved hanging tobacco. My gymnastics skills really came in handy then. I was always the first one in the top of the barn and the last one out.

I liked stripping tobacco, cuz my grandpa and uncles would always tell some of the wackiest old timer stories.

The worst part was picking up ground leaves. I left that job to my little sister. At the time I thought the whole process sucked, but looking back now, I have some great memories of those days in the field.

We used to say the front of Memco looked like a bunch of fingernails hanging down.
