Renewing Tags Online

When you go to MVA's website and renew your tags online, they give you a temporary registration to keep in your vehicle until you get the stickers in the mail. Apparently the state police don't care about the temporary registration.

The truck tags expired so we renewed them Monday night. We put the temporary registration in the truck, along with the summary page showing where we paid, the truck VIN #, registration #, and all the other information. D got pulled over yesterday and she gave him a ticket for expired tags. He showed her the information and she didn't care. She said apparently MVA isn't always up to date, so in their computer it still showed his tags as expired.

So, now we either have to pay the $60 ticket, or he has to take off a day from work (and not get paid) to go to court. So either way we're losing money. He called the barracks and spoke with the duty officer, and he said it's possible we can call MVA and have them send a letter to the police, then the state's attorney would have to review it. WTF?

Either the paperwork you print from MVA should count, or MVA shouldn't tell you it counts as a registration!

I am so very blessed
Great. :frown:

I received a letter from MVA asking for an FR-19 (proof of insurance), and I contacted my insurance company asking that they fax the form to MVA. I received confirmation from the insurance company stating that they did so.

I received a SECOND letter from MVA asking for yet another FR-19. AGAIN, I contacted my insurance company asking that they AGAIN fax the form to MVA. I received confirmation from the insurance company stating that they AGAIN did so.

I printed out my insurance info, my fax "send receipt" info, my insurance company's e-mail confirmation, and my valid insurance card and carry it in my wallet.

Guess I'll have to go up to Loveville on Friday to get it straightened out. I just hope I don't get pulled over in the meantime.

Get used to it, folks.

Due to the looming and ever growing state deficit, our Maryland state troopers have been instructed to be very aggressive in identifying vehicular violations of all sorts and to issue tickets not warnings. Specific instructions to look for aggressive driving, not using turn signals, motorcycles who do not use arm turn signals, tags, windshields, lights, etc.

And for all you cops and cop wannabes who are gonna jump on here and try to deny it... I've seen documentation so shut up.

That's fine if in fact his tags had been expired. He had the paperwork from MVA. MVA and the state police need to get on the same page.

I think you might be able to settle that over the phone..We got a parking ticket for somewhere in Baltimore (right tag #, but it was a cadiallac)..I believe Catt made some phone calls and somehow got it dismissed without fighting it in court cuz it was obvious we weren't in b-more at 130am in the morning and we didn't own a cadillac.

It sounds to me like the trooper got to write a ticket which was her goal. You will most likely win the battle in the long run, but she gets credit for the hit.

I hope it will get thrown out before it goes to court. You know, this is the second bogus ticket D's gotten. He got one a couple of years ago for having an expired CDL license. He didn't even HAVE a CDL license. He'd taken the written test, but not the driving test, so he didn't ever have the license. So of course he had to take a day off work to explain to the judge that the trooper was a moron.

I hope so. I wonder how the caddy had your tag #? :eyebrow:

So D called MVA and MVA said they could print out the $9 driving record showing his tags were current at the time of the ticket. D called the barracks to explain that, and the duty officer said it'd be better to go to court, and he recommended not getting the driving record.

D's calling the state's attorney office today to see what they say. What a mess. :frown:

D went to court today. The judge found him guilty and said the MVA documents don't count and his tags were still considered expired. They reduced the fine to $40. He has 10 days to pay or appeal. He called MVA when he left and told them, and they said the judge is wrong and as long as he has the MVA documents to prove it, he should be fine. So, he's going to appeal it.

Well that makes no sense.

Ooooh! Print this out and have him take it to the judge! ----> :stupid:

Well, it's $80 to appeal, so it's not worth it for a $40 fine. I'm still writing a letter of complaint. Won't do anything, but I'll feel better about it.

Too bad D had to take the day off to save $20. Y'all are right, cut your losses.

You'd think the MDSP would be versed on MVA procedures. I forgot to reregister by van, did the online thing, and posted the temp reg in the back window as instructed.

MDSP pulled me over for expired "tabs" and I pointed out the temp reg. He looked at it for a good 2 minutes before he let me go. He acted like it was the first he had ever seen.

The thing that pisses me off is that the judge would not even LOOK at the paperwork D brought.
