Replacement card question

I just signed into the SSA site. It said replacement cards cannot be processed online; you must visit your local office to get one.

Yep..a W-2 works just fine.

Something I find amusing, since that's such an easy thing to create.

This right here. Anyone can go to irs.gov and download a w2 then fill in the blanks. When my daughter got her learners permit this is what I did just to see how much effort they put into checking the authenticity of it. Absolutely zilch. It worked.

Like most security measures, this is designed to make people think they are safer when in reality it changes nothing except for adding more headaches to the average American citizen. I cuss president Bush every time I go to the airport!

We need more airports like the one in Cairo. They have three layers of screening/xray etc to go through compared to our one layer. Can't even enter the terminal without going through the first layer. But if you know how it all works and which guys to look for...$40 US will get you and your luggage a rapid escort through some narrow corridors and past doors with a couple armed guards who look the other way with their hand out for their cut and "Shazzam!"..yr checking in your luggage, got your boarding passes and are sitting at a bar with a cold one. 10 minutes all done...tops. ;-)

Now see I don’t mind paying to play or being the first one in line, as long as it goes to the right people, like in Cairo it appears. Unlike here in the US where I got to pay my government $100 to get through line quicker with the Global Entry program. My government is not the right people to pay in order to play.

Thanks for all the input. I tried online and it says I can't request one online. On one of the info pages it said something about them keeping the documents so I wanted to make sure I didn't need to order another birth certificate for them to keep.

Thanks all!

That's odd. When I set up my online account, it had a link for a replacement card. I click it, verified the address and had the new card within a week. The online account also lets you download your Record of Earnings and projects your benefits based on what age you retire.

Then why do they ask to see it? It's not proof of residency, it's not proof of citizenship, it's not proof of anything.
It's all a charade anyway. A SS card is supposed to show the person seeing the card you are a "US Citizen" as "US Citizens" are supposed to only be the one's allowed to participant in the SS scheme. Ya see?

I was able to get a new SS card online. I find it funny they asked for my MD driver's license (non compliant) to get the card that I need to get the compliant license.

That's odd. They never asked for my driver's license in order to get a replacement SS card online.

This is incorrect.

U.S. citizens and U.S. documented immigrant residents are able to get SS cards. It shows an authorization to work.

Interesting that some have successfully gotten one online, others not. Wonder what the difference is?

For those that did get one online, was there a charge for the new card?

Replacement card was free. I think each person is allowed ten free replacement cards during their lifetime.

Oh poop. Well it shouldn't be like that. For receiving authorization to work, they should get something called a 'Just Tax Extra Me' card. And that extra money from them, goes into the SS fund to help us. And when they become a full US Citizen, then, from that point on money collected goes into their own SS account.

Five times is the number. On another note; I found my original SS card in an old wallet the other day. Now I have two.:yahoo:

Incorrect.

The number is ten. This number doesn't count things such as name changes, etc.

(2) Limits on the number of replacement cards. There are limits on the number of replacement social security number cards we will issue to you. You may receive no more than three replacement social security number cards in a year and ten replacement social security number cards per lifetime. We may allow for reasonable exceptions to these limits on a case-by-case basis in compelling circumstances. We also will consider name changes (i.e., verified legal changes to the first name and/or surname) and changes in alien status which result in a necessary change to a restrictive legend on the SSN card (see paragraph (e)(3) of this section) to be compelling circumstances, and will not include either of these changes when determining the yearly or lifetime limits. We may grant an exception if you provide evidence establishing that you would experience significant hardship if the card were not issued. An example of significant hardship includes, but is not limited to, providing SSA with a referral letter from a governmental social services agency indicating that the social security number card must be shown in order to obtain benefits or services.

Well, your thinking is way off. If someone is here legally, working, playing by the rules, and paying taxes, they get Social Security. After all, they're paying into it just like everyone else.
