Does anybody have any recommendations for a good pet boarding facility? My 4 legged child is 16 years old and this is the first time I will have to board her. She is shepard mix about 44lbs, very loving and spoiled rotten.
Thanks in advance

Check the 'dogs' board under 'pets and animals' or whatever. There are a few threads in there with peoples experiences and opinions on several facilities.

Chesapeake Pet Resort in Hollywood - I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else - they love it there. I live in Indian Head and have researched and visited many kennels in Charles and St. Marys County. You may want to consider a dog sitter that comes to your home since your pet is elderly. Good luck!!

I agree with you a petsitter would be a better option since your dog is up in age you don't want to stress him or her out with all the other dogs barking etc. Also when you board they don't get spoiled as if they were home with someone who stayed the night with them. When boarding they take the dog out at 7 or 8pm and they have to last til the next morning with nobody to let them out. If you have someone come to the house you can ask for them to stay overnight with the dog so he/she doesn't have to be alone too much (that is what I will be doing with my dog) also she will be going with the lady I am going to use during the day to work so she won't be alone that much which will be good for the dog as she is used to being with people all day and all night long.

Try calling The Dog Nanny. She is a pet sitter and will come to your home. She lives in Calvert.

I've been boarding my dog there for 9 years! They are great! They also offer the extras I want.

I agree with Chesapeake Pet Resort. I had a german shepherd that was 12-1/2 with hip dyslasia and they were wonderful to him. It had been a long time since he had been boarded and we were very concerned about how he would do. They came highly recommended as well by my veterinarian. I had to board our new shepherd elsewhere a couple weeks ago as CPR was full. It worked out OK but the other facility didn't have outdoor runs and not sure he was getting walked/out enough to do his business even though we paid for extra times and for late hour walks. He was urinating tons when he got home, little here and a little there. Think he may have had the beginings of a urinary tract problem but after being home for a day it seemed to get better on its own (or he would have gone to the vet).

Don't take this personal jp2854 but while I fully understand the benefits of having a personal dog sitter - you have no right to make a blanket statement that all Kennel's only take pets out once a day. Maybe you had a bad experience with your last Kennel - but, that doesn't give you the right to make that statement. I can make a statement that Pet Sitter's will go through all your personal belongings while watching your pet - would that be fair. Geeeeeez...

:yay:

When I was managing a kennel down in FL we had the dogs out a MINIMUM of 3X a day. It isn't in any kennels interest to do less than that. You want to minimize the amount of mess you need to clean every day, and if they are pooping and peeing outside it is SO much easier. MOST if not all kennels do a thorough cleaning of each enclosure daily, do spot cleanings in the interim, and a full sanitize of every run whenever dogs leave/switch runs.

When you have poo smeared all over everything it creates a lot of unecessary work just from a worker / business standpoint, not to mention the smell and health issues that come with.

I personally cannot use a pet sitter unless my dogs already know the person. They have to be able to come and go freely, after all.... :lmao:

Are you sure you don't know someone well enough who would come stay at your house with your dog? I have always been fortunate enough to have a teenager, niece, nephew, co-worker who thinks of it as a mini-vacation to come stay at my house, away from the usual. If you have to board your dog, I have heard great things about Chesapeake Pet Resort as well as the Perfect Pet Resort in Lothian, Maryland. Not sure where you live but if it's in Calvert, that may be closer for you. Good luck!

I only know (personal experience) two Kennel's and they both take the dogs out at least three times a day (morning, afternoon and evening) for those exact same reasons. It sure makes life a lot easier for the Kennel Technicians.

Yes sir! Your Avatar might give a pet sitter pause!:killingme

I don't get where they were saying they only take the pet out once a day...as you claim they said. Seems to me they were saying that they take the out for the last time at 7 or 8 PM and then the pet has to last until the next morning for the next outside break.

Bulldog you got what i said exactly right. the last break is between 7 and 8 and have to last til the next morning. people love putting words in my mouth and it pisses me off big time.

OK - calm down everyone. The "flavor" of the original message was why a "pet sitter" was better then a "kennel." The example used was taking the dog out once (implied). That was why I jumped on that statement. If I was wrong - I apologize - if I wasn't - tough!:killingme

No, don't tell people about them, otherwise we won't be able to get in.
They treat the dogs like they were their own. Would always be my first choice.

Just picked my pooch up from there. She's in great shape and even looks like she may have lost a couple of pounds running every day. When I picked her up all the dogs were outside sniffing and jumping around.
Good place, good people.
