Can't bring up Google maps and find Wallops Launch Facility and draw a line to your house?
You can draw a line on google map?
And does google map always show north at the top?

I know I am an idiot, but at least I admit it.

Yes. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, and laser is also the speed of light, so arrival time for first packet will be the same. But the laser will allow higher transfer rates over greater distances.

Just curious how they set up the targeting.

Yeah I know. They are just different frequencies of the same thing. I too am curious about targeting. They are going to need something very precise. I hope it works well.

Yep, that was their challenge - laser would need to be spot on.
A 10 centimeter wide telescope onboard the satellite will point a 0.5-watt infrared laser – the same type used in ground-based fiber optic cables -- at one of three receiving stations on earth, where the now 5 kilometer wide beam (yes, it’s a LOT of spread) will be picked up by a cluster of four 17 inch telescopes used to collect and focus the signals into optical fiber and detectors. A cluster of four 6 inch telescopes are used to send a beacon to the satellite for pointing, as well as uplink data.

Not sure if I can see it from my location, but I would think Point Lookout would be a good spot.

NASA Wallops:
Geographical coordinates:

37 degrees 57 minutes north latitude
75 degrees 28 minutes west longitude

Point Lookout: 38.0644° N, 76.3344° W

I'm going over to Solomons. I've watched Wallops launches from there before. And according to the news, it will be visible as far north as Cape Cod.

If you can get on-station, the Fishing Pier on the gold coast should be about perfect. That's where I am heading.

Last week I drove by the fishing pier and it was roped off.
Why?

Gosh I have not been past there in the last week? Don't normally get over there much. Still should get a good view from the coast event though. Thanks for the head's up though, saved me the 'sad trombone' feeling when I get over there.

Nice. I couldn't see it from my house in Port Tobacco. To many Tree's in the way. Guess I should have driven down to Solomons. One of my friends in OC said he could see it shed one of the stages..pretty cool.
