Roku 3

I've been looking at alternatives to my WDTV. The description didn't mention being able to use external HDDs or video formats supported. Do you happen to know? I don't do much streaming, but the remote interface looks nice.

Personally, I'd wait a few months for an OUYA:

Can't see that here at work... I'll check it out when I get home.
thanx.

I've got hundreds of movies in ISO format which play well on the WDTV, but the WDTV has tons of bugs. They've released a bunch of updates, but the updates cause more issues than they resolve. I'm kinda done with this unit.

If I can find another that can connect to a USB hub for multiple USB drives and play ISO DVD files, I could be persuaded to upgrade.

Try this:
Ouya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Or just Google OUYA. It's pretty huge already after raising $8M on Kickstarter.

Oh, and I'm sure you'll be able to put XBMC on it which will play ISO files.

Edit: I probably should have read the Wiki myself...
On August 7, 2012, the developers of XBMC announced a partnership with Ouya to bring XBMC to the Ouya.

I received my Roku3 on Monday and had it set up in a flash. I love it. I'll investigate more channels when I have time, this weekend.

Just got my Roku 3 and still playing with it and trying to find some good channels besides the obvious, Netflix, Amazon, etc. Looking at trying to find something that carries like FX, TBS, TNT, HGTV, etc. Anybody find a good source and other good channels. Thanks!!

Crackle is a good one. PBS is on there also. I like my Roku 3. Think the CW is on it too but have not checked yet.

Currently have Amazon and trying the two week trial of Hulu+ and 30 days of "PLAYON". So far wife likes Amazon for America Horror Story which is free for season 1 which she has not seen. Playon and Hulu + for like Sat Nite Live and Frasier, and Babylon 5. Lot of shows and a lot of clips. Also, Crackle looks good also. I pay like 150 a month for everything with DirectTV + 3 receivers. We want to scale back to like the basic package and return one receiver. So we figure we will save about 80 to 90 dollars approximately. But still in early testing and trying to convince wife to use it and get used to it first before cutting and strings...lol

How is Playon working out? I was thinking of adding that.

Verdict is out on that one. One thing about PlayOn is it uses a PC as the server vice streaming directly. Worked fine on mine. I added several plug-ins too like the Warner Brothers one, AMC and Top Gear. Seems good. But as I said loaded it last nite so we are in Day 2 of seeing if this is a good alternative to what we have or at least reduce it down to a more reasonable bill. We watch maybe like 20 channels and only maybe 5 of those on a regular basis. If they only offered "ala-cart" it would make life easier.....Will update as we try this out.

WD TV Home Entertainment Products - WD Community

WD Forums just for these devices.

The most common reason for losing access to the Windows shares is the Master Browser has gotten messed up. Shut off EVERYTHING except the router. Power up the devices in the order of "never gets turned off" to "might get turned on". Like a server that never gets shut off gets powered up first.

I just updated the firmware in my WDTV LivePLUS and after it downloaded the firmware and rebooted, it bricked. Had to manually download the firmware, put it on a stick and do the update that way.

I still have an original Roku - can anyone tell me the big differences between that and Roku 3? Currently, I'm just using it as an alternative to paying for a big digital box in my computer room. I'd love to convince my husband to get rid of the HBO movie package and OnDemand that we have elsewhere in the house. The less money I give to Comcast (NBC) the better.

Here's the comparison breakdown on the Roku site.

So I'm thinking about getting one of these Roku 3's instead of installing a cable package in my new apartment. I'm already familiar with Chromecast and how that streams, but I'm having trouble understanding the costs associated with the channels and how choosing the channels you want to view work with the Roku.

I get that some channels are offered for free, and some you need to pay for. I already have a netflix account and access to an HBOgo account, but there's several shows/channels I enjoy watching when I can that I won't get with just those two accounts. Also, I prefer TV shows over movies so Netflix only gets me so far. So I'm just trying to figure out my most cost-effective options.

It seems it's a one-time cost to purchase the Roku, but when you "add a channel" is that also a one-time cost? Or monthly? Some of the big network channels like Fox Now require a login with a TV provider which is what I'm trying to avoid. How often do the channels ask for a TV provider login? Navigating the channels page is a little confusing too. For example, I generally watch HGTV but there's no HGTV channel, is there a channel under a different names that offers the shows HGTV plays? I also have 1 or 2 shows on a couple different networks that I'm in to (shows on ABC, FX, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, etc.) how do I figure if all my favorites on on these channels? Should I just put the Hulu+ channel on my Roku to enjoy those?

:ohwell:

Maybe I'm asking too many questions and I should start with, does anyone currently use Roku instead of a cable provider?
