So I'm thinking about getting one of these Roku 3's instead of installing a cable package in my new apartment. I'm already familiar with Chromecast and how that streams, but I'm having trouble understanding the costs associated with the channels and how choosing the channels you want to view work with the Roku.
I get that some channels are offered for free, and some you need to pay for. I already have a netflix account and access to an HBOgo account, but there's several shows/channels I enjoy watching when I can that I won't get with just those two accounts. Also, I prefer TV shows over movies so Netflix only gets me so far. So I'm just trying to figure out my most cost-effective options.
It seems it's a one-time cost to purchase the Roku, but when you "add a channel" is that also a one-time cost? Or monthly? Some of the big network channels like Fox Now require a login with a TV provider which is what I'm trying to avoid. How often do the channels ask for a TV provider login? Navigating the channels page is a little confusing too. For example, I generally watch HGTV but there's no HGTV channel, is there a channel under a different names that offers the shows HGTV plays? I also have 1 or 2 shows on a couple different networks that I'm in to (shows on ABC, FX, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, etc.) how do I figure if all my favorites on on these channels? Should I just put the Hulu+ channel on my Roku to enjoy those?
Maybe I'm asking too many questions and I should start with, does anyone currently use Roku instead of a cable provider?
