My daughter is entering high school next year. I dont want to be a grandmother? or a drugy mother? This day and age scares me. She goes to Catholic middle school now and I feel like I am feeding her to the wolves if she goes to Chopticon. But I have also heard some poison on Ryken. Educate me please :jameo:

I am sure humpty humpty goes on at Ryken too. Best thing is to teach your kid what is right, what is wrong, and scare the living hell out of them so they will not do wrong.

I graduated from Chopticon in 2004, and I went to Father Andrew White from Pre-k to 8th grade. Personally I loved Chopticon. Teachers were great, school is very clean. I also have family that went to ryken, and she is doing well for her self. But yea ive heard Ryken to have drug school, but every school now-a-days has it. You just got to be careful of what type of crowed your kid hangs out with. I had the same choice when i got out of middle school, and i wanted to go to Chopticon for thier sports, and I just like how it was a big school and i didnt have to wear uniforms. Plus Ryken was too damn expensive.

I've been told from the high school kids that Ryken is worse then any of the public schools.

What makes you think that Chopticon is going to turn your kid into a slut? Does she already have slut tendancies?

As you know, we chose Chopticon, but I have many friends with daughters at both. Pregnancy occurs at both. Drugs occur at both. It's all about your child and the choices they make. Just stay involved and keep the communication open. Always let her know how much she's loved (this advice is for her dad as well.) Share your hopes and dreams for her future. Tell her what's expected of her in terms of behavior.

She's a beautiful girl who gets noticed alot. An old boyfriend from last year was a little pushy on his expectations but she ultimately held her ground. If she stays strong in her values, neither school will be a problem.

You know she already told Boy 1 she wants to come to Chopticon.

:yeahthat: I have heard that too. I have a niece that spent her first 8 years in private school but chose to go to LHS rather than Ryken.

My Oldest daughter graduated in 2003 from Chopticon, my youngest is a current sophmore and a Highest Honors Student. I've had many family members graduate from there as well. I am catholic, and I support Chopticon 100%. I would never send my kids to Ryken.

I went to Ryken and didn't think there was anything too special about it... as in, there were pregnancies (not many, but there were 2-3), drugs, sex, etc. .. just like there is all of that at Chopticon. The only thing "better" about ryken is the smaller class sizes, but that really doesn't have anything to do with drugs and sluttiness like you're talking about.

I don't know about that. As far as drugs, pregnancies, etc... I'd say it's about the same as the public schools.

Doesn't matter what school your kid goes to they all share societies problems. Stay involved and stay cognizant of what your kid is doing and with whom they are hanging with to have a chance and that still might not be enough unless you place the kid in a cage as you can't watch them 24/7.

We sent our son to Ryken and he got an excellent education. He ended up graduating from University of Maryland with a buncha honors and is now in graduate school at Johns Hopkins.

I know absolutely nothing about Chopticon, good or bad.

Hi, OrneryPest -- I'm one of your son's friends and went to Ryken and college with him. :howdy:

Anyway, Ryken has its fair share of problems, but I chose to go there over Chopticon for various reasons. I liked its smaller class sizes and its spread-out, college-like campus. I think a good student can do well anywhere, though, depending on his/her social circle, classes, and after-school activities.

I also think more Ryken graduates end up going on to college (correct me if I'm wrong). The environment seems more academic, although you do get plenty of "bad apples" anywhere you go.

Choose what's best for you and your child. If cost is a problem, don't go to Ryken. I'm not sure the current price is worth it.

All three of my daughters have gone or are going to chopticon. All are honors students and two are graduating college this year, one a chemist and the other a RN. My youngest is a sophomore at chopticon now. She's also an Honor student. My suggestion is to go to Chopticon, enroll your child in the upper level courses (honors or CM classes), and stay away from the "Standard" classes. That's where you'll find the bad element you are so fearing. Keep them busy in extra curricular activities of some kind too. Stay very involved and interested. We've never had any bad experiences there, whatsoever. Good luck. Dont' freak out about it. :howdy:

Save your money for College Tuition! My niece went to Ryken and didn't really want to. She ended up dropping out of college. hmmmm

Just because a child is "standard", does not mean they have deviant behavior. A honors student can smoke dope and get preggo just as easily as a "standard" one. Children learn from what they are taught, teach your children right from wrong, talk to them about peer pressure, stay involved and they will be fine. Stereotyping anyone based on academic/intelligent levels is just wrong..... :huggy:

as some of you know, I work at SMR. that said, I agree with ken king. I attended a public high school in Anne Arundel county, one with a rather imperfect reputation, and have done fairly well for myself. high school is what you make of it. generally speaking, no school is perfect for everyone. some students will do better in the smaller, more close knit environment of SMR while others will thrive in a larger more diverse school like Chopticon.

In reference to the negatives that some have listed about SMR, I'd like to point out that we have the lowest tuition of any of the high schools in the archdiocese. Yes, it can be a financial burden, but we also offer a significant amount of financial aid to our students.

My little sister went to Ryken and is now in her 2nd year at towson state. Your going to have some of the standard problems at all high schools thats a given. But what I think I liked the best was seeing the percentage of kids from Ryken graduating and going onto College.
