Say goodbye to R.F.K. Stadium at the end of January.

Why are the demolishing it? Just because they like spending money on new stadiums?
It has been unused for years, and abandoned to the point of being both hazardous and an eyesore. It's more likely easier and more cost-effective in the long run to demolish and make a brand new stadium than repair it and keep it maintained.

It was in sad shape back before the Skins left for Landover. Floors cracked/shifted with one side 4 to 5 inches higher than the other side. Metal infrastructure barely holding together due to rust/corrosion. It should have been torn down in the early 2000s.

Way back when it was built, my father, a building contractor, told me they would have problems sooner or later because the construction project mated concrete with aluminum girders and rebar which had chemical reactions.

If I may ...
For your consideration ...

I lived in Alexandria in the Redskins heyday. A big house and all the roommates were friends with the GOATS. I never met the players, but that was when the HOGS were everything. I worked at 14th and L at an Insurance brokerage. So many great memories.

Don't forget the Hogettes.

I saw Pink Floyd there in the 1994 . Fantastic show! Sad to see it go.

Monsters of Rock, 1988 - Van Halen, Metallica, Scorpions, Dokken and Kingdom Come.

What I remember most about that concert is how hard it was to get to RFK stadium. I eventually stopped at a gas station and asked for directions. I said, "How do I get to RFK Stadium?"

The guy says, "That's RFK Stadium right there".

I said, "I know where it is... I've been looking at it for an hour... How do I GET to it?"

I was a bald-face boy of 17, and GPS didn't yet exist.
Good times... Good times.

I was working across Indepence Ave at D.C. General Hospital and heard Van Halen's sound check. It was misty so I put on my Bell Atlantic rain gear and tool belt, and went in the tunnel on the south side of RFK. The guards tried to stop me but one of the roadies came over and said "Are you here to hook up our Phone" and I said I sure am, take me out on the field.

I watched Eddie finish his sound check :larry: while Valerie Bertinelli bitched at him the whole time.

Yeah, it was quite rough, not mentioning that the last time it was used was by DC United 7 years ago. It's high time it's gone, and I hope something good will fill up the space it took up.
