Scooter Libby

NBC4 just reported that the President has just commuted Scooter Libby's sentence.

He was only convicted of lying during an investigation. The release of a covert agent's identity can be considered a crime of treason.

Yep, prosecutor said he was unable to find out how high up this treason went because Libby lied.

So, does pardoning a traitor make Bush a traitor?

How many people will Bush ruin to keep his deceit hidden?

Inquiring minds want to know.

This is actually great news. It's better to have this done before the next elections take place. Now we can link all Republicans to Bush and tar and feather them all.

The possibility of a pardon was discussed when all this began and i believe several here predicted a pardon...
Well, your predictions came true.
From MSNBC, " Bush left intact a $250,000 fine and two years probation for Libby, and Bush said his action still “leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby.” "
For Scooter, a 1/4mill fine is HARSH?? To 99.9% of us here, that IS harsh..but for Scooter?

Probation for only 24 months? How hard is that?

Bush goes on to say, " “The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged,” Bush said. “His wife and young children have also suffered immensely. He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect. The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant and private citizen will be long-lasting.”"

I wonder how much people will pay for him to come and speak at events, etc.
Ya know,,,that "Speaker $$$ Fee"?

He is not going to hurt by this...he can retire, write a book, get a make over and travel. Pretty good outcome for a man who covered up for the President.

He took the bullet and survived...and will come out smelling like a rose...

Too bad another top White House Aid ( Press Secetary) James Brady can't comment on this with his old wit and sharp comments..
....oh..ya..he DID take a bullet....for Ronald Reagan...

That's horsecrap. The "lie" was that Libby first heard about Valerie Plame from Tim Russert, when apparently he first heard it from Dick Cheney. So Fits knew exactly what the truth was and "how high it went".

However, the whole brouhaha was about whether Scooter Libby outed a covert CIA agent. Turns out that the "traitor" was Richard Armitage, yet Fitzgerald declined to pursue charges agains tArmitage.

Why do you supposed that might be?

So, does pardoning a traitor make Bush a traitor?
Dunno. Does pardoning a terrorist make Clinton a terrorist? :bubble:

Anyway, glad Scooter has been pardoned. That whole thing was a Democrat witch-hunt to begin with.

That only seems fair.
I know I wont get in a car if a democrat is driving. I have no desire to be left at the bottom of a waterway to drown while he/she stands at the shoreline watching my bubbles come up.

He wasn’t pardoned. Bush commuted his sentence, the prison part. The fine and probation stand and the conviction stays on his record.

Scooter Libby was not pardoned! I say again he was not pardoned.

Bush commuted his sentence, he is still convicted, he still has a fine, he still has a criminal record. All Bush did was say he did not have to go to prison for 30 months for lying about a non-crime the conviction and all the other penalties are still in affect.

Once again, President Bush does what his critics expect him to do. Thanks for not letting us down, Dubya! :yay:

If anybody honestly thought Bush was going to let Scooter go to jail...well...I guess they haven't been paying attention to how this administration operates.

Well hoo-ray. The whole thing was idiotic to begin with - why do you spend years investigating a bunch of people when you know from the very beginning who did it - and it wasn't even a crime anyway?
