It's how I protect myself from being overwhelmed. I find I sleep better at night and have better focus on the things I actually have control over.cattitude said:You have grown cold.
You made the cat happy for a while and fixed her purrer, that counts.Inkpen said:Scooter Pie was a stray cat I befriended in my neighborhood.
She was a little, solid black, pregnant cat, who wandered from house to house looking for a hand out.
She also reduced tha bird and rabbit community by 1 each. She was a fast cat!
I just started feeding her about 2 weeks ago to keep her near by and was able to touch her just last week.
I had a vet appointment for her to be vetted and spayed, with plans to get her adopted out.
The plan was to pet her, do a quick scruff and plop her in a carrier and off to the vet.
I just ( n hour ago) found her dead on the road.
Clean kill, hit in the head.
Why can drivers slow to avoid killing animals?
I am so upset..and she was not even "my? cat.
Just last night, sitting on the patio, petting her as she ate, I heard her purr for the first time.
Now I have to go bury her.
I hate people who kill animals!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for lettimng me vent and tell Scooters story, as short as it is.

We've been over this before. My answer remains the same.Inkpen said:Why can't drivers slow to avoid killing animals?

I do both and sleep better for it.cattitude said:I cut loose people..never an animal. That's how I keep from being overwhelmed.
It is weird how you, not you I guess, but some people, can read about 33 kids being shot and say, "How awful". Then they see a run over cat and burst into tears.kwillia said:It's how I protect myself from being overwhelmed. There's a difference between reading about a story (sense of detachment) and seeing something dead right in front of you. :shrug:desertrat said:It is weird how you, not you I guess, but some people, can read about 33 kids being shot and say, "How awful". Sorry about the kitty.

True.Nickel said:There's a difference between reading about a story (sense of detachment) and seeing something dead right in front of you.
elaine said:I drove by a squirrel on the side of the road this morning that had been hit by a car. More likely, the critter darted in front of it, as animals have an inclination to do. Anyway, the squirrel was still alive, and appeared to have it's back broken because it couldn't move the back portion of it's body.
Am I a bad person because I didn't stop and rescue it? Or, am I a bad person because I didn't run over it again and put it out of it's misery?

Inkpen said:You could be more aware, drive the speed limit and sow down a bit to give an animal a chance.
Look for eyeshine on the shoulder at night and movement on the roadside by day.
What if it was a little kid darting out on the road?
You gonna hit it to save your car?
No real difference. Just the human value you put on living things.
cattitude said:Exactly. Although seeing the news reports about the shootings on the TV, I cried.
Actually seeing an animal suffer is heartbreaking to me. And perhaps we can help them...it's not like another animal can come along and assist. I'm not arguing a point, it's just me.
elaine said:Oh, please! I'm really sorry about your kitty, but now you're just trying to make people feel bad. There is no way in hell to always stop for an animal, or a kid for that matter, that darts out in front of your car. If I'm doing 45 mph down 235 and either of them step/jump out 2 or 3 feet in front of me, I'm not going to be able to stop in time.
