My friend sent her kid to Prep n play daycare and sent in Sunblock with him. They didn't put it on him because they claimed they were unable to because it was against regulations (not sure if that is State or their own business). I certainly would hope they would be able to assist a 3 year old with sunblock.

Yikes! When I worked there we applied sunblock each day after nap before we took the kids outside. The parents were informed to apply sunblock to the kids in the morning before dropping them off. My daughter attends there now and I can always smell the sunblock on her when I pick her up. Must have been a freak situation or a dingbatty teacher.

:killingme I love it!!

I know what you mean about the sunblock thing. No baby wants to be all covered up with a blankie in 80-90 degree weather. I never had to worry about it with daughter #1, as she was born in September and sunblock season was nearly over. With this one being a summer baby, though, it'll be a different situation.

My friend didn't have much luck at that place. She brought her son there because she had heard wonderful things about the place, but she didn't have much luck. She took him out after only 3 days. The family is all vegiterians and she told them that - the very day that they were taking the kids to McDonalds. Well, her son got his first taste of chicken nuggets that afternoon.
She was pretty upset, but understood that it's difficult to monitor that many kids and overlooked it until the girl told her, "sorry, we'll try not to do it again, but we can't guarantee it." Her beef (ahem) was that if the kid had an allergy to milk and they gave him milk what the consequence would be, so why not the same for a vegiterian.

Personally TC, I think you are over reacting. It's a sunburn. You show me a kid who hasn't ever been sunburned and I'll show you a parent who's a wee bit overly obsessed with their kids.

You couldn't pay me enough to work at a school and deal with all the parent's. If I were a chaperone, I'd probably be annoyed as hell if part of the job entailed slathering up someone else's kid in sunscreen. JMHO

Yeah, I remember you telling me about the chix nugget incident before. I'd have been irritated as well. Too bad she had a crappy experience. :ohwell:

They request (and there is a sign up at this moment) that asks that the parents apply sunblock in the morning prior to bringing the child in and then they reapply later when they have outdoor play. My chicklet needs a bath each and every day to get it all off of her and out of her hair.

JMHO

That's what I do here. I told the parents know to put it on the kids in the morning. I will do it, (if needed) in the afternoon.

Blame it on lack of sleep, yup that is it. Or, I'm going senile.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that babies under 6 months of age are not supposed to have sunblock put on them. I may be wrong... but five months, 2 days, 4 hours, and 15 minutes isn't to far off. :cheesy:

They've changed the recommendations so that you can apply sunscreen to babies under 6 months. Just be sure that you avoid their hands so that they don't stick it in their mouth.

I know it's just a sunburn and lots of kids get them. And I probably am over reacting ... I haven't called the school yet :ohwell: b/c I'm chalking up some of my anger to PMS  I really didn't expect the teachers and chaperones to actually slather her up ... but I don't think it's unreasonable for them to supervise the kids and help them put sunblock on before they go to the beach for a field trip. They were there to supervise the kids, after all. :ohwell:

I'm still trying to figure out what educational value she got out of the trip ... she said she built sandcastles and they had a contest. She does that at Nanny's house.

When I went on a trip to the Elms it was pretty good. They sat them down in the classroom at first and taught them about the North American "Sky way" which is the migration route for birds, then they talked about Ephemeral pools and whatnot. A bit too "Earth Friendly, Granola-ish" for my tastes, but the kids had fun.

Sounds like the Ches/Pax trips the kids in Calvert take each year. Or do all schools in Tri County area have Ches/Pax trips? My boys loved the trips. And you're right Kwillia, they have specific little things to do and learn, even the youngest ones.

Thank ya'll for letting me know what she did. I asked her half a dozen times and all she said was "built sandcastles and brought home oyster shells for you mommy!" I figured there had to be more to it than just what she'd told me ... I don't know anyone willing to cart a school-full of kids to a beach to just play in the sand.

TC, I agree with you. You might be overreacting a bit - depends on just how sunburnt she got - but every outdoor field trip I've ever chaperoned, WE (the adults) lathered the kids up with sunblock and didn't trust them to do it themselves. All adults man a station and the kids line up and come through - the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.

Not only that, but my kids went to Elms Beach camp every year in the summer and the camp folks applied sunblock to EVERY kid throughout the day. No excuse to let little kids burn. :burning:

Thank you! :huggy: Her neck and back got the worst of it, which sucks for her wearing shirts. :frown: The apples of her cheeks, nose and backs of her legs got it a little less.

On the bright side, she'll be at Nanny's for the next week, where she can run buck nekkid like she enjoys doing (except when the daycare kids are there, of course.) so it'll probably bother her less then. I bought the aloe cooling gel stuff and put it on her to provide some relief.

Yeap. When I was teaching at a montessori school, we went down there and had many different tasks to complete, including a scavanger hunt. I thought maybe because of the montessori teaching that this was done, but when I was teaching at green holly, and we took them there- it was the same thing. I thought it was nice, and some-what educational. Like christy said-the kids had fun.

And sorry about the DQ, TC. That sucks that she got burnned.

I realize this ... my concern is that if something so "minor" as a sunburn happens on the field trip, what else? I gather from what she told me last night mine wasn't the only one who got a sunburn. She said no one said "Kids, time to put your sunblock on" or even asked if they had it on. Common sense says if you are taking a group of kids to a beach, you make sure they have sunblock on when they get there. It's stuff like this the parent's who REALLY overreact would sue for. :ohwell:

I've heard so many horror stories about the schools down here ... the "cake-taker" being handing out flavored condoms at Chopticon. :yikes: DQ asked me not long ago when we'd sell our house (since there was one for sale two doors up), and I told her it'd hit the market by the time she has to enter H.S. (high school).

Could it be that with today's 1-800-SUE-THEM mentality they were afraid to put on the children for the fear that some parent would sue them for molestation or something?

If I was a male teacher, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. Be like I had a big bullseye on my head.

Back when I was a substitute a couple years ago, I did the elementary school once and didn't go back because the kids, boys and girls, wanted to use me as a jungle gymn on recess. It was fun, but it made me a little nervous.

WC, what can you tell me about the Montessori? My gf is considering sending her daughter there.
