Sentencing Phase for England Set to Begin

FORT HOOD, Texas — Pfc. Lynndie England (search) took responsibility for the smiling, thumbs-up poses she struck for photographs taken at Abu Ghraib (search) prison camp, which made her the face of the prisoner abuse scandal. Now, with the sentencing phase in her military trial set to begin Tuesday, England's goal is to minimize the punishment.

The U.S. Navy today announced that it has released a senior Al Quaida terrorist after questioning him extensively for 27 days while being held aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea.

In a humanitarian gesture, the terrorist was given $50 (U.S.) and a white Ford Fairlane automobile upon being released from custody.

The attached photo shows the terrorist on his way home just after being released by the Navy.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Defense lawyers sought leniency for Pfc. Lynndie England at a hearing Tuesday to determine her punishment in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, with a psychologist testifying that the reservist was oxygen-deprived at birth, speech impaired and had trouble learning to read.


Hmmmm....I was oxygen deprived at birth and didn't learn to read until I was 8 years old........

My day job is to answer the Congressional letters from Senators Mikulski, Kennedy, Kerry, etc. who wonder why the military won't accept people with learning disabilities. This young woman has now made my job one he!! of a lot easier if the court acknowledges that her learning disable is the reason she acted like a SJY.

Military Judge Rejects England's Plea Deal

A military judge on Wednesday rejected Pfc. Lynndie England's guilty plea agreement in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal after another prisoner's testimony cast doubt on the prosecution's case.

Earlier in the day, Pvt. Charles Graner Jr., the reputed ringleader in the scandal, contradicted a key part of England's guilty plea, in which she said she knew she was committing wrongful acts when she took part in the mistreatment of Iraqi detainees.

Under military law, a judge can formally accept England's guilty plea only if she knew at the time that what she was doing was illegal.
