My I laws are at my house right now. They lost power around 6ish last night and it still isn't back. We went and got them around 12:30 today because FIL can't take his breathing treatments. Hopefully it'll be back on soon. I love my FIL better when I'm not spending many hours with him. ETA from SMECO is by 5 this evening. They live in Esperanza neighborhood.

You have a generator or something? Or just waiting it out?

I have been a irresponsible , the last time my genny ran was the Tencredo ... I ran the carb dry when I finished but the gas in the tank is probably 10 yrs old

Seems SMECO wasn't on their game this time around. Appears they took their sweet ol' time getting power back on. Is there that much damage out there ?

The reason in my in laws hood was a huge tree that fell across the road, from one yard into another, taking the power lines with it. Evidently there was a lot of that in the county, but spread out.

Luckily ours only dimmed a few times (and I'm still not sure if it was from the storm or a loose light bulb) and never went out.

I saw nothing in my travels clearing roads of tree branches that would justify a 7 hour outage in the 7D. I was riding around in the storm and clearing the road as I went.

From the outage map last night, there were many, many pockets of outages, some affecting thousands, other single homes. Simply didn't have the manpower to get to everything at once. Considering the number of outages spread over 2 counties, I think they did pretty good for a totally unexpected freak storm.

Also, SMECO has a repair priority procedure. Main lines first, secondary feeds next, individual homes are last on the list.

When I installed my home power backup system, I got a few comments on justification. So far, it's done it's job 3 times this year. Didn't need it this storm, but it was ready. Quite a few posts here expressing concerns about loss of power, fridges, ETA for repair, etc. I had no concerns, enough battery for 3 days. I'm fully justified.

Small power stations with solar backup are getting pretty cheap. Having one to keep a fridge or CPAP running might be a good idea in lieu of a generator.

I'm just going to move away...
So... northeast - snow and ice storms
Midwest - tornadoes
California - earthquakes
Washington/Oregon - liberals
Florida - Vrai

Wherever you go, there you are. All-in-all, our weather issues here aren't so bad.

Not specifically, really depends on what it is you want to do, and make sure you size it to the task properly. Start by figuring out exactly what you want to power and for how long, whether it's portable standby power, an UPS mode to make sure medical equip doesn't stop working, or whole-house, auto-failover or is dragging it out and hooking it up manually ok, whether it supports expandability, is modular in case your needs change. If you're a camper, does it support a TT-30 connection?

I'd recommend staying with a known brand, someone who has been around a while, has known good support. Can't go wrong with Anker, Ecoflow and now Jackery has really stepped their game up with a new line of products. Once you have a couple of units in mind, hit up YouTube and watch reviews. Nearly every unit on the market has been reviewed by multiple testers in detail.

Our new hybrid power system is kicking butt. 40 410w solar panels feeding two SolArk 15 smart inverters with 40kw generator connected that is started automatically if battery state of charge drops below 20% and back off when SOC hits 80%. Lots of nice options out there for this equipment nowadays,
