Sex of the baby....

morningbell

hmmmmmm
Today is the day we'll attempt to find out the sex of the baby. Actually he'll find out, I don't want to know.
In addition to him finding out, he'll tell both our mothers and sisters. Our families are far away, his sister being the furthest in another country, my mother b/c it's killing her, she was so involved with my first child during my pregnancy and since she can't be here to share I'd like to let her in. My sister for the sole reason that she absolutely HATES buying unisex clothes. His mother is knitting and sewing, so she gets to know.

Will this kill me not knowing?

I had to know the sex with both my kids. I needed to put a "name" to the baby. I hated saying he/she or him/her all the time. Once I knew the sex, I called the baby by his name and felt like I could connect better with the baby. I applaud you for not finding out. Makes the birth even more special. Good luck.

With that many people knowing, one of them is bound to mess up and let it slip out anyway. Besides, it makes it easier to plan everthing if you know the sex of the baby beforehand. You can get the room ready and buy clothes. Do you really want to be doing all that crap after the baby is born?

I found out with my third, only because they had to stick a needle in my belly and draw out some of the fulid for tests. I was happy to know it was a girl after two boys and the tests came back negative for a spinal defect. I almost passed out when they did the test because it hurt so much:(

He'll know and he'll buy the clothes, he has already purchased stroller, car seat, co-sleeper, etc...

I'm scared of that test, I'm not getting any younger.

I was going to not know, and then I wanted to know because it'd make it easier to talk to the baby. I thought for sure I was going to have a girl, and when I found out it was a boy I had to stop calling it "Ari" :lmao:

Basically, it'll be fine either way you want to go, but I felt like once I could put a name on the baby it was easier to connect to him.

I had an amnio with my second and I don't remember feeling any pain. Just some discomfort! Hope yours goes well. Oh, we knew with the first about about a week before. They were going to do an amnio, but the doc said that if she tried, she would probably circumcise him before he was born! Had the amnio with # 2 and didn't want to know the sex. She turned out just fine!! Good luck!!! :huggy:

I decided against this .. I'm not young anymore either but I could take that small chance of something happening to the baby.. I had 2 detailed Ultrasounds instead.

While that was being done we knew right away it was a boy

We chose not to find out with our first three and for our fourth, due this fall, we chose to skip ultrasound all together. I am not convinced ultrasound is safe and unless there is a medical reason I don't think we need to get one. I am especially worried about the potential side-effects of 3-D keepsake ultrasound. I hope we don't find out ten years from now that we were harming our babies.

I know ultrasound has been used since the 1970's but the strength and duration has increased and there is proof that it does affect babies. Left-handedness has increased in boys having ultrasound, what other changes could be occuring that we don't know about yet (autism rates are higher in boys too, I am not saying ultrasound causes autism, but this should be studies more throughly)?

Even as late as the 1960's mother were given X-rays to measure thier pelvis for birth. It was routine until the correlation with cancer rates was discoverd. Thalidomide was used for years for morning sickness before taken off the market for causing birth defects. Cytotec caused uterine abruptions when it was used for inductions to women who were attempting a VBAC in the 1990's and many mothers and babies died as a result. We don't have the best history in terms of maternity care here in the US.

Be informed and don't be afraid to ask questions, just because insurance covers an intervention, it doesn't mean it is best for yourself or your baby.

Are you implying that being left handed is a bad thing???

You're crazy to think you won't figure it out. When they start bringing home pink blanket's and little baby dolls, it's either a girl or they're hoping for a very pretty little boy

No, it's just there is a naturally occuring rate of left-handedness and it seems that ultrasound does have an effect on that rate. Left-handedness, particularly in boys, is associated with delayed speech and success in school early on though typically they do catch up in a few years.

There is still so much we do not know about early fetal development and environmental impact. If ultrasound is affecting the fetal brain in terms of left-handedness, what other things are being affected? Ultrasound can be a useful tool but I fear it is now more of a money maing venture for cash-strapped GYN's and in the majority of cases, they do not improve prenatal care.
