She got sick and tired of self-checkout, so she did something about it

Now... If only MVA would do the same.

Yep, and there are a lot of MVA services that don't require a human clerk. If you can do it online, you can do it self-serve at the MVA. Then there's a human present in case you need help or have special circumstances.

You're not really, though. Don't you remember before self-checkout when there would be two registers open and a mile long line for each of them? And everyone would gripe that they should have more checkers, but they never did that?

You're not saving them money because they weren't going to hire more checkers in the first place. Self-checkout is in addition to the checkers, not instead of them.
At most stores I go to - like, Lowe's, Harris Teeter, Walmart and especially Target - there are REALLY LONG lines for self-checkout. Last time I was at Target, it looked like Black Friday - all the way past all of the registers, well into the cosmetics area. Maybe 30 people. WAITING for self-checkout And I think TWO regular checkouts. Honest to God, it was so bad, I kept asking if there was some kind of special going on. Nope. I just hadn't shopped there in a while.

Line at Lowe's typically runs down one aisle; ditto Harris Teeter. There's usually a line at Walmart, about a half dozen, easy. And because it's a big store, people USUALLY have near full carts. You don't go into a giant store for groceries and just buy a bag of nuts.

BJ's is mostly self-checkout, and unless you go during off hours, they WILL queue you up down one of their long main aisles. I've seen it go all the way back to the refrigerated area. Last few times I've gone, they had NO cashiers. And it takes forever. Plus, they and Walmart appear to be taking the "checking receipt" person more seriously, so there's a line to LEAVE.

And thank God for that. Last two times I've renewed my tags, did it online. I dread that place.
Actually, much worse is the tag and title places. Their order of business appears to be, get rid of you for any reason, and then close for the day.

I shocked so many of them are still in business.

Other than the little fiasco I had yesterday, I've done everything online for quite a few years. But what I found interesting was that when I made the appointment, every slot for yesterday was available. When I got there, there was only one other customer. Walked in, immediately taken care of and left within 5 minutes. Full staff behind the counters.

I've never seen the place so empty.

They usually don't have LINES. Because they do a very limited number of things. I've been to the one across from McDonald's a few times, when we just needed it done in a pinch. I just remember that there was ONE person behind the counter who seemed to not want anyone to ever be there.

I always wonder how anyone in the service business keeps their job by being rude and surly. Reminds me of Ms. Trunchbull in Matilda saying the perfect school would be one with NO CHILDREN. Yeah. You realize you wouldn't the principal, either? Piss off enough customers, and you won't be sitting quietly in the office - you'll be sitting quietly at home and earning no money.

Yeah, I had to make an appointment for my last driver's license - the one where you need to bring every ID you've ever owned? That one was quick. STILL had to wait, even though I had an appointment. Might as well have been at the doctor's office.

Many years ago, before I lived in Southern Maryland, I had to use MVAs in PG and Montgomery. I remember taking a "break" from work to go to the one in Gaithersburg. I should have brought a book. I was there all afternoon. PG, I just gave up. The line went out the door and wrapped around the building. And it's a big building.

I wish there was more room to bag, and more patient machines. If I’m buying 10 items, then I’m using a little cart and it’s not cumbersome.

If I have a full cart, that little self checkout is nigh unto useless. There’s no room.
They do need more room, they shouldn't force you to put bagged things into your cart with unscanned things and then expect there to not be issues. Clueless people at them doesn't help either, someone whose kids are dancing around right in front of one of the other self checkouts.

People seem to love to patronize businesses that treat them like crap. I have low tolerance and don't get it, but my fellow humans seem to have a large appetite for rudeness because they keep going back and back.

Which is a part of the reason why I try to be, as a customer or store employee, the pleasant experience the person with whom I interact may not have had that day.

Simple solution is LOAD your cart up and walk out and leave it in line. Done it at Walmart F em.

We had a PTA visit on Wednesday to work with Mommy Dearest after a recent fall and hospital stay. She was fairly young, inexperienced, and on the verge of rude. MD never tolerated that crap from us kids, much less someone young enough to be her granddaughter. Guess who was fired by MD? 😆

I am one that will not go back unless I have to.
IMHO technology should be maximized .... RFID tags on everything, you drive your cart through a scanner - all items are tallyed, you then swipe a card or auto pay is setup ... you walk right out
I see the potential to be charged for something I did not buy, a more expensive item than I thought I bought, or somehow having to take MORE time analyzing the receipt to match the items in my cart. I like the slow way of scanning each item since once I do that I never feel the need to check the receipt.
