Sheriff driving off-duty

I wonder...with the price of gasoline continuing to climb, why is it that deputies in this county (others as well) are allowed to drive county vehicles whilst on personal business and at the expense of the taxpayers...

No...the answer that even an off-duty deputy and/or vehicle provides a deterrent is not a good enough.

Hope you all see this before before the thread is pulled by whomever...wonder who might do that!

I would expect that a police cruiser carry's any required equipment needed should the officer, though off duty, need to react to a given situation whether it be an automobile accident or a robbery in progress. JMO

Better for him to have it than someone post a thread about how he wasn't prepared. I don't mind paying for their gas if I know they can come to my aid as needed.

You make a valid point ....however you ruled out one of the most important...visibility of police/police vehicles is a deterrent to crime. Untold times police officers take police action while off duty. Hence going on duty to take care of what they need to do. Officers respond to back up other officers , accidents etc...when there are shortages or if a serious event takes place. Seeing a trooper or deputy police car parked in the parking lot of walmart is a deterrent (do you know how many theft reports come out of there!).

Officers working part-time (being paid by a company) are still required to respond to calls for extreme importance. Not that long ago an off duty deputy had a car run a light in front of him that lead to a gun and drug arrest. How do we put a cost to that? You cant really.

I have NO problem with them driving off duty. I've seen many off duty officers performing duties when they are off. It's not like they are driving their cars to Ocean City.

Don't mind that at all. Nothing like having a police car parked across the street. We have a couple in the neighborhood.

I have the day off. Not many plans, but most are yard work related anyway.

I drop the chick at school tomorrow morning and I should be home for the day. Well, other than running to my new best friend. Lowe's. For stuff. :lmao:

Yeah, know what you mean about Lowes. I'll be there getting some blinds early. If you want give me a pm or a call and I'll see if I can help fix the tree.
