Sheriff driving off-duty

Dork

Highlander's MPD
Gimme a break here...I do have a life and usually don't bother with the forums over the weekend.

What do I do? I work for the government but not in a capacity one would expect. Most persons are surprised. I will tell you that I have quite a few associates low and high level in three letter agencies. Most friends...I'll have to leave it at that.

Now...to put this thread in perspective, other counties are considering charging LEOs for using "official" vehicles whilst that LEO os engaged in part-time (can be read as off duty) employment.

Give it a break. Who cares? To me, there are a lot more people out there feeding off of my taxes that I have a problem with. How about all the people living in the projects who refuse to do anything better with their lives. How about all the goverment workers who are basically just required to show up. They can get away with doing very little and still get paid every two weeks. I"ve worked with many of those.

I think most officers would probably give up that car if you offered them a little better pay. It's a win/win for the officers and for the citizens to have those extra cars out there. If you are jelous, go be a cop. Maybe you'll have a better understanding how crazy it is to complain about something like this.

Hypocrisy

Well, I guess since it's just an inquiry and not bashing, I have a couple of questions myself. When you were serving your brethren for twenty one years, did you complain when you had a command cookout and they served you food at the taxpayer’s expense even though you received extra money for rations? Did you ever complain when your brethren were flying standby on military hops for little or no money when commercial flights would have cost much more?

Now, are you also going to question YOUR waste of taxpayer dollars by posting things on the internet while your salary is being paid by the tax payer?

Just so you know, I approve of the things in the first paragraph provided to our service members and other perks at tax payer's expense, but just wanted to point out the hypocrisy of your post. Do as I say, not as I do attitude.

As times change so sometimes also do attitudes.

During my tenure...command cookouts were self funded. The proceeds we made from other sales were funneled into a recreation fund. That recreation fund served not only us but others as well around the area. Yes...we actually did fund our own command events and no taxpayer money was used.

As for posting on the internet...my salary is not paid by taxpayer dollars.

And the military hops...yea right. Few and far between and frankly not worth it. Most times and I have seen this, a member would pony up the cash for a commercial flight to go from A to B.

Thanks for pointing out that I am not bashing...truly. Just asking a question. I should be held to the same degree of accountability as you regardless of social position or stature and I assure you I am held accountable.

I will only ask that in our day to day activities we behave responsibly and care for those privileges we have been entrusted with. It is often easy to forget that there is power in our positions. What may determine level of scrutiny is the manner in which we elect to wield that power.

I beg to differ Major. I expect during my 8 years in the military you and I would have likely been in at the same time. I know for a fact, the food provided was provided gratus on the command, even though most people there were receiving money for rations.

As for posting on the internet...my salary is not paid by taxpayer dollars.

Then you shouldn't say you work for the government, you should say you are a volunteer!

And yet, you complain about this perk, while not giving credit to the police officers who while driving their take home vehicles, stop to help the broken down vehicles, stop to back up the officer on a domestic, freeing up other officers to do proactive policing, or the off duty police officers handling the child abuse complaint. (all things I have done in the last week while driving my car off duty.)

I should be held to the same degree of accountability as you regardless of social position or stature and I assure you I am held accountable.

I agree. If you should ever achieve my social position or stature I would expect you to be accountable.

I will only ask that in our day to day activities we behave responsibly and care for those privileges we have been entrusted with. It is often easy to forget that there is power in our positions. What may determine level of scrutiny is the manner in which we elect to wield that power.

This is close to the standard by which I conduct myself day in and day out, while I am representing the community I serve.

OK OK...I'll agree to disagree. sommpd; I cannot provide you with enough information publicly for you to accurately determine my position.

I have enjoyed the sparring if you will and do respect your opinion. See you out there...

NOT Politically Correct!!
If gas prices weren't an issue, this thread would be a non-issue. I also like seeing the police homeowners in our subdivision having their cars parked in our area. If something major happens in our area, police can leave home ready to go verse having to drive to a police station to pick up a car!!! :coffee:

The police deserve this perk, the career welfare recepients who do nothing and get paid top my list. Police at the ready with a car fall someplace around 1,500,487,978, 965.00 on my list... :jameo:

I'm glad you see that as what it is, a little harmless sparring. Be safe.

In My Opinion
read alot of crap on this thread.
some in favor of the officers, some not quite as kind.
dont really feel like addressing any single post so here is my take.

they put their life on the line to keep me safe.
they work some F-ed up hours, they put up with a ton of people that have no respect for them, they have to answer to everything they do while on duty.
they get crap pay for all of this.

if they get to take a cruiser to the grocery store to try and make their dollars stretch to feed their families, Im more than happy to supply my tax dollar to accommodate them.

as far as those that think the officers are getting over on us.

do their job for a night and then get back to me.
