its a drunken week bus trip where you drink more than you ski:yay:

I did the bud trip a few years ago and did not feel pressured to drink if I didn't want to. It was nice not having to drive and there was alot of nice folks on the bus with different skill levels. I'm sure there has got to be other ski trips in the area besides that one that have bus service. Check with some of the local ski shops in Lexington Park or Waldorf. I'll post if I hear of any.

Thanks for the feedback. I can handle people drinking around me, no problem, but it sounds like that Bud trip is for more than just a weekend, and I have to be in my engineering classes from Mon-friday afternoon, say around 3 pm. A bus trip from a local ski shop would be great, and it sounds like with all the Navy people on the bases nearby, there will probably be some outdoor ski trips organized by the Welfare, Recreation, Morale offices. I have a pony tail and earring though, so I hope they are open minded too! If you hear of anything coming together via the local ski shops, I would appreciate your offer to post it to me.
Aloha, Barnacle Bill

I work on a NOAA research vessel, presently off the coast of South America putting in weather bouys, but I have my motorcycle with me on the ship. (Had a great adventure riding in the Andes mountains of Chile!) It has a Hawaii license plate, but has been all over the Americas these last few years.
In researching the front page of this SMC web, I found several military bases in the area, and my ID with NOAA allows some limited privleges like commissary and exchange. It might be possible that the military nearby arranges for ski outings, part of their recreation, special services programs. The only ski shops I could find online in the area don't have web pages, so I will try calling them when we get into our homeport of Charleston, South Carolina around Dec. 10th. "More will be revealed"

Awesome.. I worked for NOAA in Silver Spring Headquarters for 2 yrs.. Loved it.

Oh, and tell Bart Jay said Hi..

Do you have your own skii's?

I do not know what MWR stands for, but would appreciate getting any info I can to get skiing a few times this winter.
I also do not understand the comment about getting your permission to ski, but I am new to this forum, this area (what is the Bud Ski Trip and how do I find out about it?),
Thanks for the help! aloha, Barnacle Bill

Not worried about my pony tail (I look like a bloody pirate really, with a full beard!), but just that with my non-military classification as a NOAA crewmember I might not look like the rest of the active duty clean cut sailors on the bus ride to the ski spots. We do not necessarily get to enjoy all the military privileges, just exchange and commisary, so if the Welfare morale guys don't like my looks, I might not be able to get on the bus!!? I think I better get the okay before they see me, to be safe. I will have to rent skis from them too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I cannot ride my BMW up to the slopes, so need to find transport/organized trip. I looked at "Snowshoe" in WV on the web, but it seems to have few lodging options for me traveling alone. Will look for the named resorts in your reply and see if they have web pages with ideas to get there, etc.
Last year I skied at Sugar Bowl, near Lake Tahoe, and the year before, Whistler, B.C.
BMW?? Ha-WHAT??

Well, although it gets a little on the chilly side here, I only missed like 6 days last year off the bike due to weather..

You should PM Pete for BMW info, where to get services, dealerships.. etc.. He's a HUGE BMW fan and knows everything there is to know...

Don't know the crew you said to say hi to, must have left before I joined the ship? NOAA has several ships in Hawaii, so I will eventually be going home, but will be enjoying more bike cruises and some skiing until then. I do not have skis, and they would be pretty difficult to bring along on the bike. I think rentals are pretty reasonable, and you get some great gear that way. I hope the Navy connection will have stuff available, and I might try to rent for longer than just a weekend at a time.

I'll skip the bud trip, since I don't drink (11 years tommorrow!) I found the info from the Navy nearby, and it looks like they may have outdoor recreation as part of their welfare and morale program. Thanks for the help.
Morale Welfare and Recreation offices on both Patuxent River NAS and Solomons Rec Center run trips to the local ski slopes. Real cheap, and can be a single day or a week-end. I would be surprised if they are not running them now..

Great to know that there are ski trips happening through the bases. I will call them as soon as possible to get the schedules.

Is there a forum for motorcycle info where I would find the guy you suggested for info about beemer topics? Thanks for the confirmation that I am on the right track. Sounds like I might not have much time for my education!!?

Ask, and you shall receive..

BMWBMW.org is the local BMW club.. 400+ members..

If you need anything PM or e-mail me and I'll see what I can do for you. We have tech days locally, and if there is a problem we can find someone that can help you fix it, or talk you through it.

If you need a place to service your bike my garage is always open, just let me know.
