Skins getting sued!!!

GREENBELT, Md. -- A lawsuit has been filed against the Washington Redskins to get the team to offer closed-captioning during at FedEx Field.
The National Association of the Deaf filed the class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Md., on behalf of three fans from Maryland who regularly attend home games.
The suit contends that the team is violating the Americans With Disabilities Act by failing to provide captioning for the deaf and hearing-impaired.
An attorney for the group said deaf and hard of hearing fans can't hear the referees or enjoy the game on television monitors throughout the stadium.
The group wants the court to order the Redskins and FedEx Field officials to provide and display captioning on scoreboards and video monitors for all announcements, plays and penalties called during the game.

---------------------------

As much as I hate the Redskins, I hope for the NFL's sake this doesn't get through the courts. If the skins are forced to provide CC, then its only time before all other stadiums are forced to change.

I mean come on... Do the deaf fans really need to read whats going on, when they can see it on the field..... So the only thing they wont hear is the refs.
thats why Refs still use hand signals. If they dont know what the signals mean, then they shouldnt be at the game. Stay home and turn your CC on your T.V. or learn the signals.

Hey here is a signal for ya. If fans in skins jerseys stand up and cheer, something good happened. If the fans wearing the other teams jersey stands up, then something bad happened.

This is stupid, the referees do hand signals anyway for whatever the penalty is....

My SIL is hearing impaired and I make it a point to put on CC when she comes to my house. She likes football, just not the Redskins. And I don't think it is fair to tell a deaf person to "learn the signals" or get lost.

If someone deaf or otherwise is going to a football game at the stadium, I am assuming they are NOT going to watch the screens, we can do that in our living rooms. So, why do they need closed captioning on the screens? If she is that much of a fan that she watches all of the time, she prolly knows the signals any damn way...

To understand what is going on would be my guess. I used to watch football all the time with my dad. I was young, but I still watched it. I don't know any of the signals the ref's use which is why I always ask questions.

I know your SIL.... I also met you and know your hubby very well. Your SIL wouldnt expect an organization to change its operating procedures for 3 fans not being able to hear a game. Nor does she expect special treatment for her condition. SIL likes to be treated just like eveyone else.

So if we do the Closed caption for the deaf, should we have audio play by play throughout the stadium for the blind also.

I agree, but I also don't think it is a bad idea. Those who know the game won't watch the screen and those who don't understand could, including those who are hearing impaired. I don't see what the big deal is.

I think it would be a great idea to give our headphones for free/small charge at games and other venues. :yay:

Im all for meeting the needs of Fans..... But isnt that the Job of the Redskins organization and not the government???

How many deaf fans really attend games. Is it cost effective to actually tackle this. Will they loose that many fans if they didnt comply.

Last I heard they sell out every game

Well then every seat will need to be replaced or have headphone jacks installed, Plus the media cables ran all over the staduim to accommodate the 91,665 seats.

Or all the headphones will be WiFi, which means a extravgant system will need to be in place to be able to support all the headphones @ $100 a piece.

I understand where your coming from, but its not Feasible . Which is why its not being done now.

The CC is already being done for the broadcast, so there wold be no cost for that. Adding a few monitors with CC is pretty inexpensive. It's not like you have to outfit every seat, but having the service available in select locations is reasonable.

If the hand signals are enough to understand what was going on, why do we mike the ref at all? Because they provide more information than just what the foul was, such as who commited the foul, why plays are overturned, why a flag was thrown and picked up, etc. It is reasonable for the deaf to want to know that information.

The ADA requires reasonable measures to be taken, and CC can reasonably be provided.

Do we make every seat wheelchair accessible? No.

This is the same thing. There would be no need to provide these services to every seat, since that would be unreasonable. The ADA does not require that these measures be taken to the extreme. However, if there is a reasonable solution, you have to cater to the disabled.

Why not just a few seats instead of an entire stadium?

Really.... Until the next 3 guys sue because they are only able to sit in a few handicapable seats, and dont have access to seat they really want.

Do you guys and Gal, really think season ticket holders are going to give up their seats for a handicap section???

Does a movie theater have to provide CC??? Why arent they being sued also.
