Slot Passage

When the slots were outlawed, Waldorf became a ghost town for years. Some years ago I found the property tax bills for my parent's property in St. Mary's county. I just thumbed through them because they were so much less than what I was paying on the same property. Yeah, the value went up, but there was one year in the 60s I think that the property tax went up, as I remember it, 5 times the previous year. It may have been three, but it was a big jump. It was the year after the slots were outlawed.
That's interesting. I had read that government received little, if any, of the revenues from Southern Maryland's slot machines in the '60s. Apparently, almost all the proceeds went to the machines' owners, giving them the cash to buy the local politicians. Also, some longtimers have argued that slots led to a general atmosphere of lawlessness in Waldorf and Lexington Park. Was that the case? I wasn't living here then.

Im for slots at race tracks but one word of warning....

WV legalized slots just about anywhere thinking a few big casinos would be built. Suddenly every where over night a bunch of cinder block buildings went up with the words casino on the front. The buildings themselves wouldnt be suited for a titty bar. Many in the state wish that hadn't happened.
