Thanks for the replies and the hints. House is only one year old so it should be pretty efficient and I chang ehte filters and keep it at 65. We called SMECO and were very firendly as they told us that basically, yeah, when it gets super cold, we can charge more and we do it July and August as well for air conditioning.

Heat pumps (according to our technician) shouldn't be used this far north, but it cost builders too much in permits, fees, etc to run neighborhoods for natural gas and it isn't avialable in SoMD.

I have natural gas!! thank god.... so my elec. bill was only 75 buck last month!! :yahoo: my gas bill should only be 30-40 bucks.... I keep my place at 62 when gone.. and 65 when there...

I actually miss our own place. We want to find a place with gas heat when our lease is up in April!

My house is 2 months old and it is natural gas (underground lines). My old house (12 years old) has the same thing. Not sure where you heard it wasn't available.

really??? I live in SoMD.. and have natural gas... and I know Washington Gas has lines all over the area. And many more subdivisions are going with natural gas now a days  Lots of resturants have natural gas... see the meters and hear them all the time?

We live in a 2 bedroom 1 bath apt. We have window units for AC and baseboard electric heat. It sucks. I feel our bill is too high but not much we can do for now.

Yeah it does. Our apt is pretty small and there are 2 heaters per bedroom, 2 in the living room, 1 in the kitchen (which the kitchen & living room are practically the same room) and 1 in the bath. A little overkill I think. The only ones we don't use is the living room & barely turn the kitchen one on.

I have fridge that is approx 20 years old. I have often wondered if it would be cost effective to just go ahead and purchase a new one now rather than wait until it finally dies...

Go to Lowe's and look at the damaged isle....I got a $1400 side by side for $700....then SMECO gave me $50 for recycling the old one(you have to ask the sales person for this or they won't give it to you)....the "damaged" part of it was a small dent in the back corner (counter is covering it)

My electric bill went down approximately $30 just from doing this
