it was black on both ends with a skinny orangish brown stripe down it.
it was also green on the inside. (discovered by accident a few moments later)

actually what it says is that it lived through a fairly dry summer.
Wooly bears are not really a good indication of winter to come, but they are excellent indications of what they went through to get where they are.

When I was in college, a girl in my dorm found a woolly bear caterpillar. She'd never seen one before and went looking for someone to tell her about it...I forget where she was from, but she didn't speak English too well. I tried to explain to her what it was, what the legend was and the fact that it was just a myth....I have no idea if she understood a word, except the word "bear" because she looks at it and says, "Oso?" and I said, "Si, si, oso" and she walked away.
