So :sarcasm: intended Calvert.....it LOOKS like a brown snake. I was gonna say "tree snake" but I think those are green; like garter snakes.

Either way, MY answer to 'what kind of snake is this?' is, "the kind ya leave alone."

A hungry snake minding its own business...so leave it be..and walk far, far away!

...It looks like a common water snake, often mistaken ( and wrongly killed) for a cotton mouth...

Katelin is right. Common water snake. They are frequently mistaken for water moccassins because their markings are similar. One of the main methods to tell them apart is the common water snake does not have a triangle head. The water moccassins do, with a white mouth. Thus, how they got the name cotton mouth, which are not in this area....... we think.

I am so very blessed
The cottonmouth is much wider in relation to its body length, and much darker. The pattern doesn't quite match up either upon close inspection. Above all, cotton mouths are not found in MD. Their northernmost range is the Great Dismal Swamp in VA.

Shame snakes can't read so THEY know where they are supposed to be..

In My Opinion
Water snake. harmless but will bite, and you will bleed because of an anti-coagulant that they have. Infections from the bite are also not uncommon.

and
its Venomous, not poisonous (for those snakes that are)

What do you mean "it's venomous"? It is a non-venomous snake. As far as infections arising from the bite not being uncommon, this is also true with chipmunks and cats. I realize you indicated they were "harmless but will bite" (very much like a chipmunk or rabbit), but these other statements sound merely like reasons to give rednecks and good-ol'-boys an excuse to grab a shovel or a gun and cut the heads off or shoot these harmless creatures. I know because I've seen it done many times before.

I think bcp made the venomous comment in relation to several earlier posts like this one and a couple others pointing out the term is venemous not poisonous. IHe wasn't calling the snake in question either.

Looks like a common water snake. Not poisonous but mean as all get out!

NTNG i am sure you had the sarcasm button on for this. Have tangled with many snakes in Md. And have caught most and relocated them have only killed a couple. Which were copperheads when they got up too close to the house and one of them struck at my son and didn't connect. I thought at first he was kidding when he came in the house until i went out side and it was right where he said it was. If i had been a better snake dude type of person i would have relocated him also but i am not the Crocodile Hunter / Steve Irwin kind of guy. The other one i killed just happened to be on our concrete patio with a bad attitude. Have tangled with them in the woods before and they either give way or i either give way for me to pass peacefully.
