Just trying to avoid having a freak attack when I see one.

Put a horsehair rope all around the perimeter. For snakes that already may be there get this.
If you don't have any other animals, throw moth balls around or sprinkle granulated moth balls around the yard or shed. They don't like them and will stay away from them.
I welcome the snakes. They don't bother you, and are the best rodent killers. Well, the copperheads can give you some grief, but I live near a stream and there's no way to encourage them to leave.
You should thank whoever it was that taught you to be afraid of a small animal.I am very afraid of snakes, just something I can not get over. I have tried. I would just not have them around.
I checked in to that, I have dogs and it is very toxic to them.
Lady across the street saw a black snake in her yard so she loaded the crawl space with mothballs. She wound up staying at a hotel because of the smell

Snakes are not aggressive to humans unless cornered or surprised. If there is a lot of constant activity in an area, they will usually stay away.
The only poisonous snake in southern MD is the copperhead. If you're a healthy adult and get bit, it probably won't kill you.

Nope. If you have a dog in the yard, it'll be bitten by copperheads...twice.
