Snakes, whats the best way?

I'll take a snake any day over a damn spider. I think I broke a couple toes last night. I was sitting on the couch with my feet tucked up under me when I look down and there's a flipping spider on my leg. Scream, jump up, hitting a couple toes on the coffee table and tell the 6 year old to kill it. My toes still hurt.

Snakes are not aggressive to humans unless cornered or surprised. If there is a lot of constant activity in an area, they will usually stay away.
The only poisonous snake in southern MD is the copperhead. If you're a healthy adult and get bit, it probably won't kill you.

What if they are gaurding their nest or something? I have a strawberry patch I put a bunch of straw over during the winter. I'm dreading picking up the straw by hand for fear of snakes under it :jameo: I can't rake up the straw because there actully are green plants under there, almost just like the looked last fall when I loaded the crap up on them :shocking: I think I'll drink a bunch of beer then get brave and just get it done

She hops through it. I'll pick up some heavy leather gloves at southern states when I go this weekend. I need to get fertizlizer anyways. I'm wondering if maybe strawberries will just magically pop up on their own through a foot of straw  I'd much rather see mice when I'm clearing all the straw off then snakes and baby snakes :jameo:

You can use a rake, just be VERY gentle with it. Lightly rake the top covering of straw away. That will scare away any snake under the straw. You could also use a plastic tine'd leaf rake. That would probably be gentle enough for you to get most all the straw away.

When Girlie was born and still in the hospital, I took the boys and made a run to WalMart for diapers. Bought a trailer tongue jack dirt cheap on clearance while I was there. Tossed it next to the boat and went about my business. A year later I am finally ready to install the jack, grab the box, open the top and reach in without looking and pull out a handfull of 3' blacksnake. That thing flew about 20' thru the air and landed in a bush off the side of the driveway. Boy did it slither away fast once it hit theground.

:jet: Glad you are okay  I probably would have broken something trying to run away from it just as fast

Oh no, I wouldn't run away from it. I like snakes. Had a pet one in college. It was just the [jimnayborvoice]SURPRISE![/jimnayborvoice] factor. It was cold, so it wasn't too fast to move when I pulled it out of the box.

Whats the best way to keep snakes out of the yard or repellents that work?

Just trying to avoid having a freak attack when I see one.

My aunt in CT used to have a yard infested with Copperheads.. she lived on the side of a hill covered with Ivy.

Every year she rented geese to keep the snakes out.. and they made GREAT watch dogs (birds?).

The pet store in Leonardtown has a wide variety of them. My kids knew they had them and I didnt so to my surprise, bammm a container of about 20 huge snakes that caught me off guard. I was looking for a hoe or gun. Growing up on a farm I ve taken care of a many of a snake with a shovel or hoe.
