Snakes

Can someone please tell me what kinds of snakes are common to this area? I saw a very tiny silver colored snake wiggle through the grass in my backyaard headed towards my garden last evening. It scared me half to death! When I went in to get my husband, we came back out and couldn't find it. All we found was a snake skin. The skin was a silver color with marks on it. I couldn't see it's head because it moved so fast and I was fixed on what I thought was the 2nd snake (was the skin - it had "skinned" itself).

Maryland boasts 27 species and subspecies of snakes, only two of which are venomous. These are the timber rattlesnake and copperhead.

All native snakes in Maryland are protected by the Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act. This means that native snakes cannot be killed, possessed, bred, or sold without first acquiring the proper permit from the Department of Natural Resources.

I would guess it to be a ringneck snake... was it about the size of a pencil in diameter?

I thought of all the animal lovers on the forums when he found it so I told him to remove it to somewhere far away. I told him ti pick it up with the long handled rake but he picks up an oar and the snake kept falling off it and scaring him so he beat it to death with the oar. I felt bad but truly the only good snake is a dead snake. I tried to get him to just move it. Oh well.

Yes, it was about the size of a pencil in diameter and about 10 inches long or so. I was more focused on what I thought was the 2nd snake so I didn't really get a good look at the real snake. I don't do snakes so I didn't go looking for it. I went and got my husband instead.

Guess you aren't one of the animal lovers.

Poor little snake...:bawl:
:yeahthat: He was a cutie... had one of those under our bird feeder one time. I tried to get the kids to go out and look at it, but they wouldn't even go out the door. They watched me from the window while went up to it. Snaky watched me too and as soon as I moved away, he shot back out to the woods.

devenny99, thanx for not killing the snake(s), seems lots of folks freak and start hacking at em. Most are harmless, the weather is changing and they are looking for a place to hang.

Lay off the pipe. :lmao: The thing couldn't harm ya if it wanted to and would much rather run and hide than fight you anyway.

From now on, if I see stray cats, dogs, squirrells, etc. I'm going to kill them. I'm deftly afraid of rabies and its them or me.

Ok then, try a valium for that stress. Personally, I see a HUGE difference in cats and dogs verses snakes. But you do what you think is right. I bet you left me the rabies karma, didnt you. :lalala: . Hey, I think all spiders shoud be killed too. I dont like them any more than I like you.
