Do you freeze it? Milk usually smells bad to me if it's been in the refrigerator for a week.
Freezing milk causes it to separate. If you watch the expiration dates, you can usually get some dated as much as 2 weeks away.

When I lived in Italy as a kid, we lived a ways from the commissary. Back then milk only came in the cardboard 1/2 gallons, not plastic containers. Anyhoo, we had to freeze the milk, because we couldn't get it readily in between paydays. (we didn't drink milk from the local markets, can't recall why - probably not pasteurized or processed the same way)

We would thaw the milk, and have to shake it real good before opening it. But it still tasted a bit watery.
