The way I see it - IF you want to be married in the sight of the government and all of the legal consequences and privileges - then you do it their way.Once people allowed (and celebrated) the government to give tax breaks to married people, and other considerations - it allowed the governemnt to then define what a marriage is. Once you allow the government to controll anything, it is theirs to control it all.
If you want to be married in the sight of your religion - or God - you don't need it at all. When I got married, I signed the document - and then had the ceremony. In the sight of the law - I was married before I set foot in the church. As far as my religion is concerned, it is a sacrament that must be sanctioned in the sight of my God. I do see them as separate things - but - I need the legal version anyway.
