So, how does this work?

I have a feral cat. A real cutie, but skinny.

I'm trying to fatten him up, then I'd like to catch him and take him in for shots and fix. If I catch him, there's no guarantee I can get him in to see a vet right away.

Do you want to trap him?

That's the plan. A friend has a live trap he's going to loan me. I just don't know how to go about getting kitty seen by a vet in a reasonable amount of time so he doesn't have to stay in the trap long.

That's a tough one. Maybe call the vet and explain the situation to them, let them know you may or may not be able to catch the kitty and see if they have any suggestions.

Chances are he's just a stray and not truly feral and once you catch it, it will be fine. How does he react to you? Do you intend to use your own vet or are you wanting to use something like the Well Pet Clinic? If you are using your own vet, maybe you could give them a heads up and see if they can suggest something as far as an appointment. Do you intend on keeping the kitty or rehoming it?

I have a large crate/cage you can use if you'd like, I can sent it over you way with Otter..you could keep the kitty in your garage.

Before you do anything like shots/spay or neuter, get it tested for feline leukemia/aids.

I'll be happy to help you if you need it.

I think I'd rather rehome it, if it's not feral. I think he has made a home under the shed, and he runs under it everytime I walk out, if he's not already under it hiding. I put food out this morning, and didn't see him. Checked about 15 minutes later and the food was gone.

I've never had a cat with any of the above. Are you suggesting I just have him put down if he has something?

If I'm gonna' have to wait for test results to come back, then a crate might be a good idea. Thanks.

Our rescue tests the cats/kittens before surgery and if postive, sadly we euthanize. Too many healthy ones that need homes. Test results are same day.

Just let me know what you want/need.

I should use your rescue, if possible. I'll catch him after I get the crate, so I don't have to worry about him being in a tiny little cage until I can get him looked at. I'll be happy to contact your rescue organization if you can provide a number.

What I do when I have multiple ferals to catch is make an appt. at the Humane Society (HS) for 2 or 3 cats, then whoever I catch that night goes for surgery the next morning. Can only stays in the cage over-night, and no food and only a small amount of water prior to surgery. HS will test for Disease BEFORE surgery - if the cat is positive they will put it down if you agree to that. So the surgery and the test can be the same day .....

After surgery I put the cats in a crate with a small cardboard box in the back of the crate for them to hide in, and then put food/water in the front of crate and a small litter box (usually a shoe box with litter or dirt in it). It's not always easy to transfer a feral cat from a trap cage to a crate w/o them escaping, so you may need help with this. Best to hold boys in a crate for 24 hours after surgery and girls for 48/72 hours.

Sounds like the cat is feral by how it hides under the shed. I'm also willing to help depending on where you are - if I'm closer to you than Catt, just let me know - I'm in Brandywine.

I recently trapped a kitten that made a home in my hay shed. I kept her in our upstairs bathroom isolated from all other pets until I could get her in to be tested for FeLV and FIV. She was negative, so I got her vaccinated and managed to find her a great home! She was pretty wild when I caught her, but she calmed right down and turned into a very nice kitty! Hopefully your boy will calm down when you catch him too.
