So what IS there in Mechanicsville?

It's me again... wanting more information on Mechanicsville area... what stores are there? Are there parks? Camping? What is La Plata like, which is likely where I am going to be working? I'm so curious, and can't seem to get a good picture in my mind about what this place is like! We see a house for rent there in Mechanicsville that has been posted since May... is that normal for a house to not rent for so long? It looks nice in the pictures...

yes parks. like John V. Baggett Park - where Moneta Strickland was recently randomly murdered. But don't worry too much, they found the killer. UPDATE: Police ask for Public

Laplata does have a theater also, it is the Port Tobacco Players.

Laplata also has several nice shopping centers.

La Plata is nice because it has a small town feel, yet straddles a main east coast (non-interstate) highway. There are a few nice, locally owned restaurants, several chain restaurants and fast food. We have Walmart, Target and Lowe's, but the mall and other "big box" stores are up the road in Waldorf. We are the Charles County seat so we have both the county and town government (and associated taxes), plus town, county and state police barracks all in the same area. During the summer they have free concerts on the lawn of the town hall and there's a farmers market behind the courthouse twice a week. The hospital is in the center of town and it's closer to DC than locations in St. Mary's County but further from the base, although I have to say that was one of the most peaceful commutes I've ever had. It's about an hour from La Plata to the base and driving through Amish country and down Route 5/235 is easy until you hit base traffic in California, but not nearly as much traffic as commuting in Northern VA or into DC.

66beans is no longer there, however another "coffee shop" opened in its place. (Sorry the name escapes me at the moment. There are only about 5 tables in their, so I really don't consider it a "real" coffee shop.
Uhh...how many tables are there in most coffee shops? Most Starbucks have around 5-10. What do you consider a "real" coffee shop? Does it have to be in the middle of a massive bookstore and have 20+ tables?

Contrary to what most people have said, there is a town of Mechanicsville.
No its not the big city but we are still a town...

:nono:

Like NorthBeachPerso said, technically there's only 1 incorporated town in St Mary's county. I'd still call Mechanicsville a town, just as I'd call California or Lexington Park a town, but they're not official townships.

I LOVE living in Mechanicsville. I have been there since 1999 and it has been great. I sometimes have to go to DC for work and it is so much nicer commuting there from Mechanicsville than Lexington Park. Also if you want to do things in DC, Annapolis, or Baltimore, the drive isn't as far. I drove up to National Harbor for the weekend and it took about 30-40 minutes to get there. Easy peasy.

I, personally, prefer to be a bit more rural. I could not stand dealing with all of the people in Waldorf, La Plata, or Lexington Park on a daily basis. I think Mechanicsville is a great central location and a good middle point for you and your husband. :yay:

From Mechanicsville it's a half hour drive to Colonial Beach, gramps.

It's 30.76 miles from the Wicomico Clubhouse to Colonial Beach. If you can drive 60mph from there up 234, across 301 bridge and through lights in Dahlgren/King George, good for you. It's not really probable, though.

Don't worry about crime in Southern Maryland. It is not that common, although I know there will be people who disagree with me. But I'm from Philly where you are surrounded by crime wherever you live!
That is one of the big pluses of living in Southern Maryland. Lower crime rates!

yes, that would be a dream come true, to have a massive bookstore and have 20 tables!!!!:yahoo:
Speaking of bookstores, do you know how many there are in St. Mary's county? We have none way up here in the Northern part of the county-we have to travel to Waldorf. Just curious...we used to go down to a bookstore in the Calif/hollywood area, but that one closed years ago. (Can't remember the name of the bookstore.)

Bay Books at Wildewood Shopping Center. It was a nice store. I know the owner. He was bummed about having to close it.

He flat couldn't compete against Amazon and e-books. Evolve or die.

No offense, Mudpuddle, but anyone who pines away for a b&m bookstore needs to be welcomed into the 21st century. Plus they can't make money with people sitting around reading the books - you have to actually buy something.

Sherri, if possible, take a trip to the area, and have a look around. We moved to Calvert County in 1984 from Laurel. I hated this area for a short time, because I was used to walking to any store you can think of. I just love the area now.

That's special.

Yes, it was. Sometimes, things just click; it is stars in the right alignment, a universe thing, or something. Don't be jealous. I might decide to 'like' you, too. I still think that NurseSherri will be happy here. How could she not be!

Don't move here!!!!

My wife and I getting here late last year put the county over capacity, and it has only gotten worse.
